We chose Sandwich as our base for a week in Cape Cod, and we chose the Belfry for our hotel. The inn is actually comprised of 3 buildings - the original chapel, and a pair of large colonial houses called the Village House and the Painted Lady. From the excellent website we chose the Kristina room in the Painted Lady, which is at the top of the house up a couple of steep and narrow staircases, so not the best for anyone with mobility problems. This gorgeous room is all corners, angles, and sloping ceilings, with a roof window which floods the room with light. The large and supremely-comfortable bed has its head made from a church pew. Ther's not a lot in the way of furniture, but a decorated chest did stand out. Tmeperature control was provided by a small but efficient aircon unit, and a large ceiling fan. There was the usual iron, hairdrier, and TV, but no fridge. The bathroom was dominated by a huge jacuzie bath, and a separate shower cubicle. This is definitely not your standard hotel room!
Breakfast is taken in the Belfry Bistro, and provided another change from the ordinary. Enough has been said here about the architecture and the conversion from a church - for the record, we thought it was extremely well done - and breakfast too is a little different, offering a daily choice of one of just 2 entrees which can vary from bacon and eggs to chicken sausage scramble. We also had an evening meal in the Bistro. Whislt we found both the food and the service very good, it all felt a little formal for our tastes - we are, after all, on holiday - but the place is undoubtably very popular, and was packed over the weekend.
Comments have been made about the staff, and we found them pleasant and courteous. But we didn't see much of them.
If your idea of perfection is large hotel with corporate fittings, and everything the same and in the same place, then the Belfry may not be for you. But if you like things a little different - quirky, even - then do try this inn. We like quirky, and we loved the Kristina and the Painted Lady.
