“In love with Kristina”
Reviewed 21 June 2012

We chose Sandwich as our base for a week in Cape Cod, and we chose the Belfry for our hotel. The inn is actually comprised of 3 buildings - the original chapel, and a pair of large colonial houses called the Village House and the Painted Lady. From the excellent website we chose the Kristina room in the Painted Lady, which is at the top of the house up a couple of steep and narrow staircases, so not the best for anyone with mobility problems. This gorgeous room is all corners, angles, and sloping ceilings, with a roof window which floods the room with light. The large and supremely-comfortable bed has its head made from a church pew. Ther's not a lot in the way of furniture, but a decorated chest did stand out. Tmeperature control was provided by a small but efficient aircon unit, and a large ceiling fan. There was the usual iron, hairdrier, and TV, but no fridge. The bathroom was dominated by a huge jacuzie bath, and a separate shower cubicle. This is definitely not your standard hotel room!
Breakfast is taken in the Belfry Bistro, and provided another change from the ordinary. Enough has been said here about the architecture and the conversion from a church - for the record, we thought it was extremely well done - and breakfast too is a little different, offering a daily choice of one of just 2 entrees which can vary from bacon and eggs to chicken sausage scramble. We also had an evening meal in the Bistro. Whislt we found both the food and the service very good, it all felt a little formal for our tastes - we are, after all, on holiday - but the place is undoubtably very popular, and was packed over the weekend.
Comments have been made about the staff, and we found them pleasant and courteous. But we didn't see much of them.
If your idea of perfection is large hotel with corporate fittings, and everything the same and in the same place, then the Belfry may not be for you. But if you like things a little different - quirky, even - then do try this inn. We like quirky, and we loved the Kristina and the Painted Lady.

We had a great week staying with Chris and his staff in the Friday room if the Abbey. The staff were all extremely friendly, helpful and courteous. The innkeeper, Chris, was always there when we needed something and even provided beach chairs and towels when we mentioned we we heading by the beach one morning. Breakfast in the Bistro every morning was fabulous! Our last night there, we were able to join in on a wine-tasting/food pairing with the vintner as guest speaker. Wine and food were great! We also stayed for dinner afterward at the Bistro and have to say this was the best dinner we had during our week in the Biston/Cape Cod area. Two thumbs up for Benjamin Porter, Executive Chef!

Let me begin by saying that we were there over the Memorial Day weekend - and that this is a review of the restaurant (rather than the inn).

The building is magnificent as you drive up. When you walk in (from the parking lot), there is an enchanting garden with water, statue -- it looks like a place you could sit for hours. Once we got inside, though, in my opinion, the transformation from church to restaurant was not so successful and kind of dated looking now. Its pretty cavernous. And while we were there on a busy holiday weekend, there were few diners. Sitting in the dining room (they were not serving outside), was a little like sitting in a large waiting room with little ambiance. The tables had nothing on them at all, it was rather plain. Something on each table to draw the eye would help immensely. The woodwork and bar, while I assume they meant to mimic the original church design, to me was rather dated and 70's looking. In any case, I really did not "settle in" and feel comfortable in that dining room.

The server -- she was top notch. Friendly, professional, knew the menu inside & out. Helpful and most attentive.

The food -- we starting by splitting a salad. It irks me no end that the kitchen didn't split it, rather we had to cut it up and serve ourselves. Completely ridiculous in a place in this price range. Our entrees -- fish and scallops, were fresh, tasty, but nothing exceptional. And at this price range, I expect beyond ordinary.

My date and I, we always look on the bright side, we have a very positive attitude about things. Of course we enjoyed eachother and our time together. But when you factor in the price of a meal and wine, this place does not measure up. Within a 20 minute drive there are other, much much better options.

Thank you so much for your review and comments.

As subjective as one's opinion is regarding "art/decor" we would just like to share with you how others feel. We just received for the 5th year in a row voted most romantic dining by Cape Cod Life readers for 2012 year. In addition we have the highest rating from third party voting by Zagat on Cape Cod with a 29 for decor, 27 for food and 27 for service. You would be hard pressed to see the same from some of the finest establishments around the world. If you are a member of Open Table read the comments....we were noted in the Top 10 American food last summer in the Northeast from diners of Open Table. All unsolicited reviews. We consistently get 4.6 - 5.0 rating out of 5.
Regarding the comments about the wood and outdated interior. We intentionally did not change the wood but saved every piece and repositioned all the items within the context of the interior. The bar back is the actual confessional in which we store the wine. The bar itself is made with the original pews of the church. Yes, they were built in 1901. I have considered totally changing the interior to reflect a contemporary mode, but instead prefer that what you don't find anywhere else. We get diners from around the world, many Europeans, UK, Canadians, and South America who revel daily of what was accomplished and a typical comment is you just don't find this anywhere...it’s so beautiful! But then again it’s all subjective. We tried to make use of “correct” re-constructive adaption.

We are one of the few establishments that still has live, real music, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday brunch. Just like our food is all made "original" so is everything about the Belfry from the sincerity and warmth of our staff, to the live professional music and the original art on the walls. How many establishments do you really see original art throughout, not posters? You must have missed the fireplace currently lit with blazing candles but in the cooler months we have a roaring, REAL fire not gas.

Outdoor dining is always available weather and guest contingent. Just like last night even though the temperature went from 70 degrees to 56 degrees we still had some guests enjoying the terrace. I aoplogize if for some reason the hostess did not seat you outside if that is what you preferred.

This Memorial Day we had some of the best business in three years. Saturday we had many large parties and they did clear out in typical Cape Cod early fashion…Sunday brunch was exceptional and for dinner we had a better than Saturday evening crowd (go figure?). And in typical gregarious fashion Gary the piano player was here from 6 -10pm, playing to the guests with his jolly behavior. Sunday Greg Harper wooed the brunch crowd playing on the terrace from 11am – 3pm. It was a beautiful Sunday!

Thank you again for your comments but I just hope for those who want to come, relax in a truly forgiving environment, to savor great food and wine with a loving, generous staff to look after you, please consider us at the Belfry!

We just got back from our weekend get away in the Tuesday room. What a great find this place was! We were welcomed in by the friendly staff, and he showed us to our room. The Tuesday room is AMAZING! The stain glass window is gorgeous, I think I might have taken a hundred pictures of it! The room was a great size, with high ceilings, a gas fireplace, a whirlpool tub, and a small deck off of the bathroom. The inn is on a cute side street with a delicious bakery a few doors down, along with stores for some retail therapy, including Sandy Paws to pick up a little gift your your four legged friend you had to leave behind for the weekend :) We spent all of Saturday at the Heritage Mueusem and Gardens, which is a must see if you love flowers! That night we had dinner at the bistro, and the food was beyond delicious!!! From the appetizer to the dessert, we couldn't have asked for a more perfect meal, and our server was wonderful! And I can't forget to mention that each morning, the inn offered a full breakfast that is included in the room rate. The breakfast was delicious and gave us the fuel needed for a full day of exploring the cape! We will recommend Belfry Inne to all of our family and friends! We can't wait to make the trip back to this charming place!

Charming place to visit. Very comfortable bed in a unique room. The staff is very friendly. Be sure to eat here because the food is amazing. We went on a rainy day and night and still had a really nice time. Conveniently located for walking around town.
