“Hiking along Norway's oldest timber lock staircase”
Review of Soot Canal

Soot Canal
Reviewed 30 July 2015

The Soot Canal is Norway's first and at the time the largest lock staircase for timber operations. It was built for transporting timber from the Mangen to the Halden waterway, and was in use from 1849 to 1932. Nowadays you can walk along the 1 mile long canal, and take a look at the remains of the 16 locks.

I've been there many times. Its a nice and peaceful place.

It's located 23 km / 14 miles west of Skotterud, along rv 21. From the main road there is a sign "Sootkanalen" leading you onto a dirt road half a km to a small parking lot with an info sign.
