On a muggy afternoon, it was a pleasure to sit on the breezy terrace looking out over the marches and winding river in Essex. The lunch menu was unusually limited and looked like reduced menus of most restaurants in the area--fried or fresh shrimps, Caesar salad with or without additions, lobster roll, fried calamari, burgers and pizzas. We tried both shrimps --crispy Coconut (delicious) and fresh (which were soggy thawed), pizza (with mozzarella and fresh tomatoes), Caprese salad, Caesar salad with shrimps and house salad. Bread and butter were an appetizer course, but the bread was fresh baked. Caprese was made with excellent mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes. The Caesar with shrimp was pretty ordinary, but the pizza was original with no tomato sauce--only fresh mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes with some Balsamic velvet drizzled over the top. It needed salt (and hot pepper for me) but was delicious with fresh-made crust.
Desset seemed simple--ice cream sandwiches! Homemade chocolate chip cookies with either chocolate, strawberry and/or vanilla ice-cream scoops between--incredibly good but messy. We tried all, and the plates were licked clean.
Given the setting, reservations are probably a necessity in the summer. But a wonderful spot and delicious meal awaits on a lovely day.
