“Fort Hill B&B Nantucket Cottage”
Reviewed 24 November 2011

The Nantucket Cottage at the Fort Hill B&B is the perfect spot for a Cape Cod vacation. All of the advantages of a B&B with the privacy of having your own cottage. Quiet, private, spacious cottage is perfect for 2 people. Cozy and comfortable with views of the water. Very nicely furnished and decorated. The innkeepers, Jean and Gordon, were so nice and the most gracious hosts. They went out of their way to make sure that we had a great vacation, offering recommendations for places to go, activities, restaurants, etc. Jean is a fantastic cook, and we looked forward to delicious gourmet breakfasts each morning. Every day the menu was different and wonderful. Fort Hill B&B is a great location - quiet, right in the National Park, with hiking trails and access to the beach, but also very convenient. It is right off Rt. 6 in Eastham, which makes it an easy to drive into Orleans or Wellfleet. I will definitely want to stay in the cottage again the next time I am in Cape Cod. No children. No smoking.

We stayed in the Lucille room which is upstairs all to itself. The bathroom is down the hall but private although anyone standing at the foot of the stairs can see you going in and out of the bathroom in whatever state of dress, or undress. But it was clean and cute. Only one sink. The bed was comfortable as was the room if only a tiny bit on the small side. We found reading and lounging in the living room downstairs to be more comfortable than our room. There was tea and coffee available in the living room which was nice. The owners were very congenial and helpful. Breakfast was good but a little heavy in the carbohydrate category and light in the non-vegetarian protein category. In fairness I did not tell them I was vegetarian. But pancakes without a non-meat protein option is not a good breakfast in my book. Although the pancakes were very good. The inn is next to a wonderful place to walk right on the water and in driving distance to anything on the cape. We had a really nice weekend here.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to give us feedback on your stay at the Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast. We are pleased that you had a “really nice weekend” and that you thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality and sweet treats while you were “lounging in the living room”! Hopefully, you used our cozy bathrobes for privacy, and you were not surprised by the floor plan (or having "only one sink"!) in the second-floor Lucille suite. While lovingly renovating this National Historic Register house, we were able to incorporate a dressing room with vanity, adjacent to the Lucille suite bathroom. Many of our guests find this combination of bathroom/dressing room desirable. However, as a result of adding the dressing room, there was room enough for "only one sink", not two, in the Lucille suite bathroom.

It is very important to us that we are able meet the expectations of our guests, and especially important that they are happy with their choice of accommodation. We speak personally with every guest before taking a reservation to ensure that all concerns are answered.
In hindsight, because of your desire for more space and privacy, we should have suggested you reserve the spacious first floor Emma suite with its own private sitting room and ensuite bath, or the totally private ocean view Nantucket cottage. Both were available when you booked the Lucille suite (albeit at higher rates), so perhaps it was our oversight not to highlight the differences in accommodation. We will strive to improve this aspect of our reservation process.
We have duly noted your no-meat preference to ensure that we provide you with ample “vegetarian protein” for your next visit. Had you mentioned your limitations when we inquired about dietary allergies/issues, both at the time of reservation and again at check-in, we would have been happy to provide you with additional choices, beyond the yogurt, milk and cereal that are always available.

A terrific, cozy B&B at one of the Cape's best outdoor venues. We stayed in the Emma Suite, way above average in terms of comfort, room and attention to detail. We also toured the cottage, and it is very well done. We'll probably stay there on our next trip. Breakfast was delicious (and different) every day. And you can't beat the surrounding area for walks and views of the salt marsh and the beach. Finally, the owners are very friendly and engaging, and have plenty of excellent recommendations for the area. It is a pleasure to stay with folks who clearly care about the quality of their inn and the comfort of their guests.

I can not say enough good things about the Fort Hill Bed & Breakfast, though most of my positive comment are about Jean and Gordon Avery. My husband and I chose Fort Hill as our honeymoon spot after reading some positive reviews online, and I have to say it was the best vacation experience I've had. The Inn is beautiful, and perfectly situated in a nice marsh area. We enjoyed walking down to the water for sunrises and sunsets. All the rooms in the Inn were wonderful and cozy. (We stayed in the Emma suite.) Jean's homemade breakfasts each morning were a real treat. We had the pleasure of staying at Fort Hill for 6 nights and I woke up each morning excited to head into the dining room to see what Jean and prepared for us. We had great chats at breakfast with other guests at the Inn. I could keep writing about how much I fell in love with Fort Hill B & B and Jean and Gordon, so I'll just say that I highly recommend this as a premier destination on Cape Cod. Your stay here will be warm and inviting, and you will find the human connection missing in other hotel stays. Besides all this, the location on the Cape is perfect - easy access to all points North and South. My husband and I are going to try to make our trip to Fort Hill B & B and annual treat!

Room Tip: You can't get a bad room here, but the Nantucket Cottage is really a great spot.

We were looking for a B&B for my husband's birthday. It is a rare chance that we getaway without kids. The Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast was perfect - it is situated in one of our favorite areas of the Cape, the home is historical but yet refurbished beatifully and clean, ocean view trails are adjacent to the site for easy access for early morning strolls, the breakfasts were delicious and very filling, and Jean and Gordon are wonderful hosts.

Room Tip: The Emma Suite was just right for us with its separate library and large bathroom. This room is lar...
