Eight of us from my Book Discussion Group ate at a round table in the back. We were given EXCELLENT service. The waitress even accommodated us with separate checks, handled smoothly and promptly.

Everyone enjoyed her meal. Good food with good prices. No wonder this restaurant is always busy.

One suggestion -- have a brighter light in the foyer as customers enter. There are many elderly patrons whose eyes don't adjust promptly from the light outside to the dim foyer.

A Baltimore area classic for over 3 decades, conveniently located near the Beltway and under the same ownership since opening in 1982. Owner Dave Jones is an hospitable man, and it shows in the quality of food, preparation and attention to service. While a “fine dining” establishment, you’ll note plenty of modestly priced entrees and signature preparations of appetizers and various sides. And compared to the same preparations from very plush and fancy establishments, the food here is an absolute bargain.

The menu covers the waterfront with numerous choices of beef, poultry, pasta, salads and of course seasonal seafood. Lunch and dinner menus cater to those who could eat a horse, and those who want just a little something. The cream of crab soup is a “must-have,” and the desserts, made in-house, are the stuff of dreams. Chocolate cake with butter cream icing, and -oh, what the heck- yes, I’ll take a dollop of vanilla ice cream, with that! Holy cow.

The staff, which seems to be perpetually in their 30’s and 40’s, has virtually no turnover that I’ve ever noticed. A good sign. And these people are real pros. Friendly to a fault, completely knowledgeable about the menu, prompt and efficient.

The restaurant has basically two sections. The lounge is to your right after you pass through the lobby. Straight ahead is the dining room. Your choice should be based on the type of ambience you want; the food and drink will be superior, either way. If you want a quiet, subdued atmosphere, go for the dining room.

But if you want a more lively setting, it’s all about the lounge! Mark me well, here, I said “lively,” not “NOISY.” The music (a mix of 60’s and 70’s pop, mostly) is audible but not deafening. And the wide screen TV’s, which monitor sports events, are turned way down, or maybe even off. Unless the Birds or Ravens are in the playoffs or in a championship game, in which case, all bets are off. Bottom line: you can actually talk to people in a normal tone of voice, and be heard. There are tables and booths also located in the lounge, situated for quieter, more private engagements. And, yes, you can be served a full course meal at the bar, itself.

If you find yourself feeling “at home” in the bar, that may well be owed to the fact that many of the patrons ARE, in fact, at home. These are neighborhood, local people for whom the Peppermill serves as a kind of club. Mainly working adults and seniors, they are not at all exclusive or snooty. To the contrary, you can, and I often do, fall into conversation with them and have a most delightful time. When I leave, I have the sense that I have been among friends. Maybe that’s why Baltimore is known as “Charm City.”

And do the bartenders know how to pour and mix a drink? Oh, yeah. And at the most reasonable price.

While of course diners sometimes have children in their midst, this is not a “kid’s place.” Nor is it a “scene” for young adults who want loud distractions. This place is favored by mature adults who make darn good company.

If you are a regular at the Peppermill, all this comes as no surprise to you. But if you are new to town or passing through, and want the best possible combination of food, drink, and a relaxing venue with an “at home” find of feeling, there is no other choice.

hadn't visited this venue for a decade or more. Was delighted to find it as wonderful as I had remembered. The service is still excellent though found the old principle as true as ever- the Waitstaff always more gracious than the hostess! All three of us had fish entrees and all raved about the quality. A special treat was a Beet Salad, replete with nuts and grated Feta- remarkable. Found that the menu has gotten more sophisticated since my last visit. I won't take so long in returning, I assure you- a reliable, delightful place on the York Road

I have been going to the Peppermill for about 17 years. My wife has been going there even longer. As other reviewers have said, their food is consistently good, prices are reasonable and the service is great. They have had many of the same staff for years. The owners make the rounds and chat with patrons.

There are two dining options: the dining room and the bar/lounge. We tend to sit in the lounge and meet up with friends. The drink prices are very reasonable and they pour a great drink.

This is a fine restaurant in suburban Baltimore, that features plenty of convenient parking off a major interstate. The clientele in the restaurant is elderly; there won't be a table without a white head. So this is not the place for a youthful crowd. Having said that, the food is quite good, and most things on the menu are well-prepared. i have found the wait staff to be fully informed abut the offerings, so ask as many questions as you like and you will find a solid response. The prices are reasonable for a quality restaurant. Go, and enjoy.
