“Good For Days, Bad for Nights”
Reviewed 8 June 2012

I stayed at Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort for the Memorial day weekend. I was not impressed the resort, If you only like the beach and swimming it is a good place but if you prefer other interests, the lodge has nothing to offer. The horseback riding, fishing, train ride, etc are off the premises, Some you have to drive an hr away to get to so no fun in always driving away from the resort to do things.

The lodge looks pretty on the lake but the building is unimpressive. It is just okay nothing special. The room was clean and I had a lovely view of the lake but not much else to offer, The resort does not have any evening activities i.e. pool table card table, business center, bingo, etc for guests to enjoy. All that is available is the cable tv in the room.

Also, we wanted a table in the 1 restaurant with a view of the lake. We were told the tables near the window were reserved, We were in the restaurant for 90 minutes and I only saw 1 couple come in who were seated near the windows. A man and 2 young boys arrived and they were seated by the window and I know they didn't reserve a table.

If you want to do something beside laying on a beach that is 10 minutes walk away than look else where as I didn't find the resort a good value for the funds,

Room Tip: rooms farther away from the elevators have better views

My husband and I stayed here over a weekend as a mini getaway. We live in Maryland and this is a beautiful part of the state. We enjoyed our stay very much. The room was spacious and clean. Lots of activities and very family friendly (we went by ourselves but could have easily brought our 2-year-old with us. They seem to offer something for everyone: a pool, beach by the lake, a playground and activities for children, a beautiful golf course, as well as outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing, etc.. We enjoyed the aviary, our 5-mile hike around the lake, and going out on the lake in a kayak. The spa is wonderful! I enjoyed my mani, pedi and prenatal massage. They have a bonfire with smores every evening until 10 p.m., weather permitting.
The food was fine, though as other reviewers noted a bit pricey in the restaurant. Still, the breakfast buffet was enjoyable. They offered a prime rib buffet for dinner one night during our stay, and truthfully the only thing I enjoyed was the prime rib itself and the dessert. The other dishes were overly salty and somehow lacked flavor. If we stay here again I think we will venture out to nearby Cumberland for dinner.
In a nutshell:
Pros- Clean, relaxing, family-friendly, many activities to suit different interests, lovely spa
Cons- tiny fitness center, pricey food, decor (hallway carpets and wallpaper) a bit dated

We only stayed one night and crammed all the activities we could into one day. Scott, our Segway tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. The food and service in both the Lakeside Restaurant and Lounge was attentive. The lake is clean and beautiful We would definitely return.

Room Tip: Choose a lakeside view

This was our first time at Rocky Gap. We were looking for an outdoor vacation, and we really enjoyed ourselves. The hotel is in a great location & has all the sporting equipment you could want to rent if you don't have your own. Loved the hiking trails, the aviary, & being able to kayak. The pool is nice, but a bit small & they were out of towels for a whole afternoon one day. The food is average, but overpriced .. although kids under 10 eat free - which helps. The rooms are average, but good enough for the stay. If you want to go to the beach front, bring beach towels &/or folding chairs with you, as none are available there. The beach did get crowded with lots of locals.

It would be nice if the resort had some lawn games. For the class of the resort, the room should come standard with a fridge - we needed it for medication & they charged $15 for it.

We will probably go back, because it is not too far from home and a nice get-away ... but there is room for improvement there.

Room Tip: We were on the golf side, which was not as nice as view ... but it was quiet.

We enjoyed our stay at Rocky Gap. The location in a state park is hard to beat, and we loved our walks around the lake. The rooms and public areas are attractive and well kept. We found the food in the dining room to be quite expensive, but that's usually the case at a resort. Rocky Gap Resort is not close to restaurants, so you pretty much need to settle on eating at the resort unless you're willing to get in the car and drive for several miles.

Overall, the staff is quite friendly and helpful. The only exception to this was the young woman at the front desk when we checked in. While she was efficient, that was about it. I always wonder why a smile and basic welcome to a guest can't be extended. It does SO MUCH toward getting your stay off to a good start.

We stayed in the off-season and did not travel with children, but I would think that this would be a great place for a family vacation as well as for couples or those on business. We look forward to returning to Rocky Gap.
