“Call of mountains amidst Tiger Reserve ”

Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta
Reviewed 5 May 2017 via mobile

The climate changes suddenly as one reaches the top of hill to visit the ancient Gopalaswamy temple, The picturesque mountains and landscapes along with cool breeze and occasional drizzle soothes the traveler. Food is arranged for pilgrims at the temple.

The temple falls is the restricted tiger reserve zone, hence only Govt buses ply (fully packed) on these hilly terrain to the top. It takes around 30 min one way. The turns and twists ans the steep climbs makes for a adventurous ride. Usually 3 to 4 buses ply with thirty minutes interval in between.

On the halfway mark from the highway to the temple, there is a forest dept. gate beyond which private vehicles are not allowed. Frequent bus(KSRTC) facilities are provided (ticket cost Rs 20 per person one way). There is an ancient beautiful temple located on hilltop dedicated to Lord Krishna. The outer side of the temple provides a panoramic view of and around Bandipur tiger reserve. Cool breeze is a treat too. But the only thing to take care is the bus timings (last bus at 4pm). Overall, a must visit place if you are going on Mysore-Ooty road.

Visited this temple on 26th Jan 2017 on the way to Guruvayur. Some how missed earlier reviews about ban on private vehicles to the top of the hill. Ended up spending more than 3 hours waiting for the KSRTC buses and they were very crowded being a holiday. Senior citizens will have very tough time in these buses. They do not increase the frequency based on the crowd. Otherwise, temple is serene as usual. Beautiful location and great views.

This is a very good scenic place to visit which is located far away from all the busy city life.If you are lucky enough you can spot few wildlifes also. But keep in mind that you are not allowed to drive all the way up to the temple you are stopped at the statrting point of forest(checkpost) and asked to take a KSRTC bus for the rest of your journy.I dont have any issue with it but they start the service around 8.15 am in the morning and the buses are damm slow in climbing the cliff and by the time you reach the top the beatifull mountain view you expect to be covered in the fog will be gone.Long back they use to allow private vehicles but i dont know what happened now they have restriced the entry of private vechiles.Atleast they should start the KSRTC service at 5.45 or 6 Am so that we will be able to enjoy the mystic view of mountain range. One more reason i am rating this as average is due to the amount of restriction you face once you reach the hill top ,peoples unnecessary shout on you for even walking around the surroundings.
