“Charming B & B, but small rooms”
Reviewed 29 July 2010

We spent 3 nights in the Ketch room, which was very small. The bathroom was a decent size, but could really use a make-over. It is a charming old inn, but we really could have used air conditioning. The ceiling fan was essential! In order to have any air flow, the shades needed to up raised which let the light in very early in the morning. Ugh.

Breakfast was adequate, but we found the main dish each day to be very sweet. One day it was a two cheese omelet with one of the cheese being something like cream cheese.

Water, coffee, and tea were available all day. They also had a fridge and an additional wine fridge at the disposal of guests.

The inn keeper and staff were excellent.

We stayed at Harbor Cottage Inn a week ago and it was lovely. We were in the Harborside suite which is perfect for a family of 4. At first I was concerned that we weren't in the heart of Bar Harbor, but that provided to be a good thing as it was a short distance away, but we didn't have to deal with the crowds (or Obama's arrival). They served a great breakfast.

We had found this B&B on the internet, and liked it very much. Located on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island, but easy access to all activities. Very friendly hosts and competent service crew. Nice rooms, tastefully equipped and finished. Great breakfast on the porch. Very helpful and knowledgeable hosts, with recommendations, information and reservations for all local events and activities.

Southwest Harbor - on the "quiet side" of Mt. Desert Island - is a favorite, special destination of my (as of this trip!) fiancee and me. But, despite having visited SWH many times over the past five years, we hadn't had the pleasure of being guests of the Harbour Cottage Inn until this trip. The bottom line: We loved it! And, we would - and already did - recommend it to good friends. The owners, Don and Javier, run the Harbour Cottage Inn the way a B&B should be run. From their sincere, warm welcome into their lovely property, to excellent recommendations of area activites, dining and sightseeing; to the clean, tastefully decorated and cheery rooms (with high quality linens); to their delicious, made-from-scratch breakfasts (think omelettes with brie cheese...apple crepes...handcut fresh fruit, homemade scones, and a refreshingly nice, high quality carafe of coffee) - all served on the peaceful veranda overlooking the sprawling front lawn. The owners' thoughtful attention to detail and caring for their guests enjoyment is evident throughout, with umbrellas and walking sticks tucked discreetly into a corner, local guidebooks and other genres lining the shelves, teas and pastries served in the afternoons, etc. The harbor is directly across the street, and one can easily stroll into town to dine, shop, or just do some leisurely exploring. Don and Javier's warmth was like that of good friends we hadn't seen in a long time. They were there and available when we needed them, yet unobtrusive when we didn't. Our engagement weekend was all the more special because of our stay at the Harbour Cottage Inn!!!

South West Harbor proved to be ideal when visiting the area because of its convenient location to the park and the quiet peaceful atmosphere at the end of a busy day. The food served each morning was delicious and they made special selections available to my husband because of his diabetes. The owners made suggestions when asked about places to eat and things to see in the area...The rooms were very clean and offered privacy---fresh coffee and tea were always available. WE enjoyed everything about our stay at Habour Inn.
