Great downtown location, the Strand feels like a classic. It offers movies as well as performances. Butter machine wasn't working, but the popcorn was good enough as is.

The Strand has come along way since it's renovation from a two screen movie theater. Every show I've gone to has been fabulous. What I love is the intimacy of it. Maybe as I'm getting older I appreciate the smaller venues more. It's very nostalgic. And at the hubbys request we went to see Colin Hays who was a foul mouthed delightful Scottish storyteller of songs. Oh and he's the guy from Men at Work which down under is one of my top 80s songs. He sounded awesome and felt very current. I love just a man and his guitar. I think anyone that plays at The Strand will never dissapoint.

Historic theater on Main Street in Rockland. Lots of restaurants around to eat before or after the show. We watched a live comedian and the location is fantastic. They have a wide variety of treats and drinks available. The theater has plenty of seating, but you can see from anywhere you sit. The seats are old-fashioned, and slightly narrow so anyone of a heftier build might be a little uncomfortable. But overall, great location and super friendly staff.

Yes, this renovated/restored theater which enjoys status as a registered historic landmark still does show movies but has also morphed, like much of Rockland, into a venue for unsuspecting events and varied tastes. For example, I spent nearly 3 hours attending a "world premier" movie, the third in a series, concerning the evolution of a relatively new endeavor: ocean planning.
To give a better feel for the kind of events held there, let me describe what took place. The doors opened promptly at 6 o'clock when patrons were admitted into the lobby where interesting munchies were offered for FREE! Did I mention that the event happened to be free as well? Along with the food, the sponsors, all local institutions involved with the ocean, were there chatting and offering materials related to the evening's theme,
Promptly, at seven, the hour long movie began. While this production was not going to break any box office records, for those of us who use the ocean for food, work, or recreation time went quickly. Finally, at the movie's end, there was a panel discussion about the efforts being made to create active data bases for all the activities that occur along the shoreline with the hope that planning for future activities will be done with an understanding based on factual data.
So, as you can see, while the Strand is an historic landmark, there is no telling what you might find by going on inside.

Saw 'The Salesman' here last night and loved watching a movie in this restored 20s-era theater. Its classic neon marque fitting right in on Rockland's quaint, Edward Hopperish Main Street, The Strand sits opposite The Farnsworth art museum, as well as Rock City Cafe and Fog restaurant, making dinner and a movie easy. With a variety of upcoming events on the calendar, including concerts, National Theater and Met Opera simulcasts, this place is a real cultural asset to mid-coast Maine. Definitely drop by and support it.
