Owner description: Celebrating Maine's Role in American Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America's greatest artists. With 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 15,000 works in the collection, there is always something new on view at the Farnsworth. The museum has one of the largest collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. Its Wyeth Center features works of Andrew, N.C. and Jamie Wyeth. The Farnsworth's library is also housed in its Rockland, ME, campus. Two historic buildings, the Farnsworth Homestead and the Olson House, and Julia's Gallery for Young Artists complete the museum complex.

The Farnsworth is well known by Wyeth lovers, and we went down there to see a special N.C. Wyeth show before it left. What we did not know, however, is how much else the Farnsworth has, and what an accessible space it is. We were able to tour the whole museum in just over 2 hours, without feeling rushed. Docents are standing by if you have questions, but there's plenty of space and the day we were there no hordes of tourists. The Chinese zodiac sculptures by Ai Wei Wei were displayed in such a striking way that I could have spent the whole afternoon right there. Check out their website and go if you can!

As someone not too familiar with the Wyeth family of artists, I visited this museum not quite knowing what to expect, but left quite impressed with not only the Wyeth artwork available on view, but also the exhibits encompassing more modern artwork of Maine, of impressive array and variety. Someone could easily spend a long morning or afternoon here, maybe more. This is the best type of Art Museum, in that I left wanting to explore more about the Wyeth family, and the art and artists of the region. I also left intrigued about how a town of this size developed such a substantial museum and gallery, very impressive. This museum is probably best for teens to adults, young children may become bored or restless.

This is a lovely museum with lockers for purses, bags and jackets. The WeiWei exhibit was phenomenal and well curated. The security people are well versed and happily answer questions both asked and not asked! The Wyeth exhibit was well hung and again with helpful staff. Make a point of visiting to see whatever the Farnsworth has to offer.

Stayed overnight in Rockland and in trying to decide what to do on a cool autumn Sunday morning discovered this museum opened at 10:00am! For the adult entry fee of $15, we enjoyed about an hour wandering through this small art collection. We are not art lovers or particularly educated in art so we appreciated the some of the history and pieces that detailed NC Wyeth versus Andrew Wyeth versus Jaime Wyeth. Truly the jewel of this museum is the Wyeth collections but there are other rooms with a variety of genre and there is a changing collection (golden Chinese zodiac masks while we were there). Not being a true art lover, I appreciate small museums where I can focus and not be overwhelmed! This museum is definitely worth a visit while in the area.

What a find. What a painter. As a pretty much art No-Nothing I soaked up the whole exhibit and experience. From his paintings to the incredible preparatory drawings to a memorable tour of the Olson House. Will never look at " Christina's World" the same again.
