My husband and I ate lunch at the Dolphin Restaurant midweek, post season. We were surprised at the number of people there as it's a bit off the beaten path. We shared a cup of their famous seafood chowder which comes with a blueberry muffin. Both were the perfect temperature (piping hot and butter-melting warm) and surpassed our expectations. The chowder was a classic Maine "chowdah", milk based, lots of seafood and most important, tasting of the sea. The muffin was full of blueberries just delicious. We promised ourselves that next time we'd each order a bowl of chowder and need nothing more. However, we'd ordered the fried haddock plates, mine with French fries, my husband's with onion rings. We had enough time to savor our chowder and take in the fabulous view before we were served. The lunch portion of haddock was plentiful and perfectly cooked. There was a traditional tartar sauce for dipping and the cole slaw was classic. The star of the show were the onion rings which were slim ribbons of crispiness. They and the perfectly cooked shoestring fries were virtually grease free and a great accompaniment to the fish. The service was equally fine. We were greeted warming when we arrived, seated by the window and given time to glance at the menu before our very capable waitress arrived to take drink orders. Her timing on all counts was impeccable. Watching her manage a number of tables it seemed that she had a good grasp on what each needed in terms of attention and she seemed to enjoy her work. We'll definitely make the trek down the west Harpswell peninsula again soon.

The Dolphin was an unexpected delight. The ambience is newish construction, tastefully done. Carpeted floors make it not noisy, as many seafood places are. The view is outstanding. The waitstaff excellent; friendly and knowledgable about the food and drink choices. Great craft beer menu, nice wine choices.

My wife and I both had the parmesan-encrusted haddock, which was prepared very nicely and presented on the plate in an appetizing way. It was several steps up from the typical Maine seafood restaurant - really making other places seem like seafood "joints," while The Dolphin comes across as a restaurant with attention to food and other details.

We arrived at 5:45 on a Friday in September and were sat right away, but when we left around 7:15 there was a significant line.

Definitely recommend. The best place we've found so far in Harpswell.

I found this place years ago when it was in its old building, and I have not missed a chance to go whenever we are in Maine. The fish chowder and lobster stew are just outstanding, blueberry muffins are great (and not too sweet). I finally found a version of the fish chowder recipe on-line, because Chicago is just too far away! The view from the new restaurant is just beautiful. Don't miss this gem on the Maine coast.
