Brilliant Cooking

Review of Hartstone Inn
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Aug 2022
Traveling through Camden we booked a night and later added a dinner reservation. We were blown away. The Inn is beautifully and eclectically restored, the gardens well-designed, myriad comfortable spaces to sit. You would never know you were only a block up from the main shopping district. It is the food, however, which was extraordinary. The three course dinner was Michelin worthy not because it was overly complicated but because it was seemingly simple, beautifully plated with prime ingredients and brilliant seasoning. We had salads (stunning vinaigrette), haddock and steak entrees, crepes and sorbet. I imagine the entire menu is extraordinary.

We just left the Hartstone Inn after an incredible night. The accommodations are gorgeously designed and maintained with a thoughtful eye toward luxury and charm; the Inn is mere steps to the heart of Camden, which is as cute and welcoming as could be; and the restaurant (with a can’t-miss happy hour) is one of my favorites in years.

But most importantly, the staff who work this inn (notably Kavid, who checked us in and waited on us in the restaurant) are extremely kind, helpful, and joyful.

We will be running back to The Hartstone Inn as soon as possible.

Staff was very nice and helpful. Ate at restaurant which was good, but not over the top. Rooms were a bit not up to standards with need for improvements(i.e torn carpet). Stayed 2 nights, but had to be transferred to new room due to bed sinking in the middle of mattress. Staff was very eager to please and gave no difficulty with change of rooms. Public areas are nice, but again the rooms lacked a 4 star rating.

While the location is lovely, the staff are friendly and the food was wonderful we left feeling quite unwell. Our first night my husband and I began to have throat and chest issues as if we were coming down with something. I was up all night coughing. Upon further inspection the next day, my husband found a heavy layer of black mold in the split heat pump/ ac unit. We shut it off and opened the windows. We had paid for an additional night so we stuck it out but even with the AC off we struggled due to the amount of mold. Left earlier then we would have liked to avoid any further illness.

If mold sensitive I would not recommend staying here.

The rating is high online, and the pics were lovely. I am quite careful when selecting our vacation spots. One of our favourite spots in Maine is the Trellis House in Ogunquit. Difficult to surpass for the value. The Heartston Inn & Hideaway charges the same price, therefore we expected something along the same lines.

Our first surprise was that there was not anyone there to greet us. We waited several minutes until a young lady with her phone in her back pocket came to us. Enter our CC info and quickly ran through the property finishing with, "Everything else you need to know is on the paper". Bye.

Our next surprise was a poorly installed very noisy in-window A/C unit. The ductless unit in the room wasn't functioning and I guess that this was their solution. As we were on the 3rd floor where it is constantly warmer, this unit had to run day & night.

My wife is a Food & Beverage GM for a government institution in our capital city. She knows what clean should look like. The bathroom was not clean. Corners in the bathroom needed cleaning, as did the shower. Good thing we were there for only 2 nights.

The bed linen was the wrong size. One size bigger than the bed, and the mattress itself needed changing. Sinking into the bed to the point where getting out is difficult is not fun. The bed posts were wiggling around. They were not secured.

Due to the lack of cleanliness in the room, we were hesitant to eat in their dining room for breakfast or dinner preferring to explore what Camden had to offer, and we discovered many fine spots such as Food & Co.

We did not visit rooms on the other floors, so I cannot comment about them. They may or may no be fine.

At no point did any staff member stop and ask, "How are you enjoying your stay?" I would have shared on the spot. No one even took notice of us.

Heartstone Inn & Hideaway is in need of some serious renovations. Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth both inside and outside (the outter prt of the Inn has completely lost it's charm and is in dire need of some serious landscaping). Should they do this, then they will become that B&B as they advertise.

Currently, this is not what you get for your money.

What a treat! Such a fine dining experience, all topped off with the best desert I’ve had in years! Definitely get the Blueberry Almond soufflé! And the Lobster Cobb Salad was also delicious and unlike anything you’ll ever have.
