As a person who traveled extensively for business in my younger days, I might have a different set of criteria in which to evaluate a hotel: Cleanliness, good plumbing, and efficient heating and cooling. The Colony Motel was excellent at meeting my value points.

My future son-in-law and I had to come to Maine to make emergency repairs to my Mother's house on the Schoodic Peninsula. I desired to stay in the Bangor/Brewer area (larger metropolitan area) as opposed to Ellsworth in order to increase the selection and diversity of restaurants. Not knowing where to stay, I referred to Trip Advisor. The Colony Motel is rated # 1 in the area, and now I know why.

Yes, it is off the beaten path on Rt #9 North, and perhaps few travelers would take this route, but it is still just minutes away by car from numerous restaurants in Brewer and Bangor. It is a family run business (Lynn and her husband), and their dedication to their craft is demonstrated in every room. Even the caulking at the bottom of the tub, where it meets the floor, was perfect. You are not dealing with potentially uninspired employees from a Fortune 500 company, but two individuals who are committed to insuring that your stay is second to none. Even though we were dressed for cold construction work, and would have startled the weak of heart, Lynn treated us like family.

Our rooms were IMMACULATE....no spots on the carpet; no stains on the bedspread. The water pressure at the shower head was just like home, and the plumbing worked. ( no standing in ankle deep water in the tub after running the shower for 2 minutes). The heat in our rooms was electric baseboard, so there is no constant, annoying cycling of a hot air blower keeping you up all night like you would find in a chain hotel.

While I realize that there are times when a "full service" hotel is needed, if your travel plans do not place that obligation upon you, then stay here.

Full disclosure: there are no "land line" phones in the rooms, but in this day of smart phones, so what. Also. Lynn informed us that her rooms will be up-graded with large screen TV's ( I was fine with the TV in my room)

What a great place to stay if you are in the area. The couple who run the hotel are as nice and attentive as all these reviews suggest.
We had a room last minute for two nights- well kept, modern, immaculate and little touches that made a difference. Only negative was the coffee served in tea bags? Never saw that before and definitely did not like it, but what instant coffee in a hotel is really good; not really relevant just personal preference.
It was not inexpensive but that could be the last Minute booking and the fact we got the last room which had a small kitchenette with a stove, refrigerator, etc.
Again, this is the place to stay of you want very nice Accomodations in hotel/motel.

Lynn and Steve have created a wonderful surprise in Brewer. Their motel rooms are scrupulously clean and stocked with thoughtful surprises such as a refilled ice bucket and little Hershey bars for sweet dreams. Our friends and I stayed there at the start of our trip and were so happy, we're returning at the end of our trip next week. Kudos!

A well run family business, just across the river from Bangor. End unit with kitchen was quiet and suited us perfectly for one night at the end of our 2 week Downeast vacation. Very close to the airport, even though it felt rural. We have reserved for a night attached to our Downeast visit this year, too. This place is a gem.

We have just returned from another fantastic 3 night stay at the Colony Motel. Steve and Lynn are the greatest owners we have dealt with in our travels. We were lucky enough to find this place by chance on our way home from a trip to New Hampshire a few years ago. Being from Canada it is important to us to find a place we feel we can trust, this is definitely it. It has become our home away from home whenever we are heading to the US. The place is very clean, prices are good and they really care about their guest's comfort. No matter what they are doing they always have a minute to chat and are a wealth of knowledge about things in their area. Our accommodations had a separate full kitchen which we love. The surroundings are very serene and this is something we love since the trips are usually about relaxing. We love this place and tell all our friends about it.
