We stayed 2 nights in Marvin's Gardens, the rustic cabin off the beaten path at Four Mounds, and were totally delighted with the experience. My girlfriend made the arrangements as a surprise for my birthday weekend, and she done good! The cabin is secluded and private, but with all the comforts of home, and more: A fully equipped kitchen with all cookware and serving utensils one might need, a great room with fireplace, piano, library, flat-screen TV, all manner of eclectic and unusual decorations and appointments, including snowshoes above the mantel and a wooden canoe overhead in the rafters, a comfortable bedroom with wide windows overlooking the woods and Mississippi River below, and a clean bathroom with shower and tub. The outside deck was spacious and peaceful, with woodland and river views, and quite private enough for very casual attire on a warm August evening or for morning coffee.
The landscaped grounds of the estate are beautiful and well maintained, and we took long leisurely walks through the gardens and along the river overlook trails. We imagine the property would be a wonderful destination any time of the year, and recommend it to couples for a peaceful and romantic getaway, and to families for a fun and different kind of experience.

I stayed at Four Mounds for a family wedding, and instantly fell in love with the place! The setting is incredible, so peaceful and serene, the house itself is absolutely wonderful, so comfortable and cozy, yet spacious with room for all! The breakfasts were delicious, and the staff could not have been more accomodating. In addition, the history of the house and grounds is so interesting, I continued to delve into that when I got home. I truly hated to leave, after two nights, and cannot wait to go back.

We have come to 4 Mounds every year for 16 years; a week in the cabin in October is truly a respite that anyone who has a busy life would cherish. We've also stayed at the Grey House, and it is magnificent in its accommodations and history. The site of the Mississippi and the cliffs of Wisconsin/Ilinois right out yor window in unrivaled. The staff is the most accommodating we have ever had - even at so call 'premiere' hotels. Stay at Four Mounds and experience the trails and solitude right in the middle of a city!

Just returned from a trip to Dubuque. Found the Four Mounds in a magazine called the Galenian & booked one night. What a beautiful site with a home built around 1906. You drive up a long winding driveway to this amazing two story home with views of the Mississippi. They have a variety of rooms available & the staff was great.. The breakfast was fantastic & a stroll around the grounds is a must. This property is part of a foundation & they are in the process of renovating other buildings on the property. I would recommend this B&B to anyone!!
