Dhankar_the unforgettable terrain, located at 12776 ft from sea level at Spiti, Himachal Pradesh. A beautiful village with ancient Buddhist gumpha and monastery and a lake. Number of houses are 68 here. We l, group of friends stayed at Dhankar heights, a very well maintained hotel with all amenities and with a marvellous view.

As an any other Gompa the place has serenity to it. From the top the view is nice. I speacially liked the drive up to the Gompa when you can see the confluence of Pin and Spiti river. Good photo opportunity too.

From the stories of lamas throwing stones at invaders to corridors cut into into rock face, it is not hard to believe that it was the old capital of Spiti. The monastery has a statue of Dhayan buddha and Buddhist scriptures in Bhoti language.

It is situated about 25 kms. east of Kaza and serves eastern part of central Spiti. Dhankar is a big village and erstwhile capital of Spiti King during 17th century. On top of a hill there is a fort which use to be a prison in olden times. Listed as one of the most endangered sites in the world, as it is vulnerable to sound and wind erosion, but uncared till date. No visible efforts to preserve this great Indian heritage. The Monastery has about 100 Lamas. Buddhist scriptures in Bhoti language are found here. Principal figure is a Statue of "Vairochana" (Dhayan Budha) consisting of 4 complete figures seated back to back. It has relics in the shape of paintings and sculptures.
