Have been around Europe and have seen many beautiful sights and homes. This is truly a gem in the Indianapolis area. And, completely free of charge. The home is such a great exemplar of style, craftsmenship and taste. It is a must see for the visitor.
The employees in the garden shop and home are friendly, approachable and warm. It is a sight worth spending an afternoon visiting.
There are free tours of both the house and gardens, or you can adventure throughout both alone.
Again, a diamond in this city!

We were looking for something to do in Indianapolis on a warm October weekend and decided to visit this house and gardens. We were unexpectedly treated to something very special.

This house and gardens are part of Eli Lilly's estate. Also, on the grounds is the Indianapolis Museum of Art. When you enter, there is a fork in the road. To the left is the Art Museum and to the right is the house and gardens.

The house itsself is a large french chateau style mansion, which is beautiful enough. However, the gardens and grounds surrounding the house are just beautiful. To the left of the house, are formal and informal gardens, with several trails, that include a waterfall and two bridges on an inclined landscape. From the back of the house, there is another lawn where one can see parkland and a lake in the distance. To the right of the house, are greenhouses and gardens with unusual flowering plants.

Framing the house, in the front, is a large lawn bordered with large trees and a beautiful fountain at the end of the lawn. This is about as close as one can get in the Midwest to the feeling of being in Versailles.

The house itself can be toured and is a free self guided tour. The interior of the house on the first floor was decorated in a style that I did not care for but I did enjoy the beautiful views from the windows. It was fun just to dream about living in such a beautiful place.
