“Visit Ireland in Galena”
Reviewed 30 January 2012

This is our second visit to this hotel. For both visits, we had a warm welcome and comfortable room along with a fine breakfast and entertainment on the weekend. The location is close to Galena attractions and other sites further afield. The hotel does have a pool and whirlpool which we had to ourselves when we happened to have used them. There is also a lounge area on the main floor with great chairs and a library of classic irish literature. If I return to Galena, this hotel would be my first choice for where to stay.

Room Tip: The view of the valley landscape on the back side is nice and probably better than looking at a park...

My wife and I stayed at the hotel over the NYE break. The best things about the hotel are staff (extremely friendly and helpful), the location (just outside of town and a great view overlooking the valley... but it is right on Rte 20 so you may hear some semitruck traffic as well) and the bar (best tasting Guinness I have had in a long time and good bar food..little on the pricey side). I have stayed here before and will stay here again but the two things I disliked about the stay was the "hot breakfast" on Sunday... not hot, not very good and small portions... the continental breakfast on the other hand was just fine. The second thing was for a non smoking room... it stunk of smoke. Maybe it was due to New Year's Eve and people below us were lighting it up a little more but it was pretty brutal. The second night it seemed to lessen up quite a bit. It was never an issue during past stays. The hotel itself was very clean and the housekeeping staff did an excellent jobs with the room. The hotel is worth the stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a valley view and stay away from the bar/ lobby for more quiet... 4th floor preferably

We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary here. The breakfast basket, staff attention to comfort, and well-appointed room all were what we expected, based on the web site exploration. Frank O'Dowd's Irish Pub, with Irish singer-guitarist, on the premises was most enjoyable.

I guess for all the hype I was expecting a lot more. They called it an Irish Cottage and then charged more money. It looked irish from the outside and in the lobby area. Once in the rooms they are plain and nothing special. Actually quite plain for the price. Breakfast was great. One major complaint I have is the irish dance show in the evening. It is posted all over galena to come and watch including the hotel it was advertised to come down. We came and bought food and drinks to watch and then these poor high school girl dancers were made to go around the room with a basket and ask for money to pay for their night. Tacky!! If you want irish dancers to come...pay them. The same thing for your evening music entertainment. We came and bought drinks and food but did not have to pay his wages. Just can't say I was overwhelmed by my stay and would be happy to stay somewhere else too.

Thank you for you comments. The young Irish dancers, ranging in age from 8 to 18, are part of a formal Irish dance school rather than employees of The Irish Cottage Boutique Hotel. In fact, labor laws prohibit the young ladies from being compensated for their performances. The dancers use the time on stage to practice many of the routines that they use in a Feis (Irish dance competition) throughout the Midwest and United States. Money’s the young ladies collect doing the performance underwrites the cost of travel, dresses and lessons. As any of the Dancers will tell you “thank you for supporting our love for Irish dance and we hope you enjoy the show!”

Ok, I grew up in the area and frequently come back. Have stayed at the Irish Cottage a couple times but frequent the bar more often as I really enjoy the live entertainment . The rooms are clean but bathroom is pretty small however, the sink is separate from the shower and toilet so that kind of makes up for it. Our room was a double queen and felt spacious. I do feel that the bedding could use an upgrade. They're a little stiff for my liking and the covers are rather thin, not a comforter and not really very luxurious. Our room was also a connecting room and we could hear EVERYTHING next door, if you know what I mean. You do get a hot breakfast so that's a good value. The scones are tasty and the coffee hot. Next time I stay I will splurge and get a suite.
