Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel
Ranked #56 of 192 Hotels in Chicago
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 21 January 2010

Stayed for four nights in Jan 2010 at the legal firm corporate rate of $139/night

The Good:
- Comfortable bed, very clean room, spacious bathroom
- Very good fitness center - at least a dozen cardio machines, two sets of free weights, two workout benches and a few weight training machines
- Conveniently located in the Loop, 2 minute walk to Magnificent Mile area
- Starbucks cafe is accessible through the underground path so no need to put on a jacket to get breakfast or a coffee!

The Bad:
- The area near the window was very cold so I had to crank up the heat - this caused parts of the room to boil and other parts to remain cold
- $14.95 for Internet access is pricey - Hilton should be a leader in the large hotel chain market and dispense with these fees across all their hotel lines.
- I didn't have a car, but valet parking was $49/day - that's as expensive as some cheap motels! I've never rented a car in Chicago, so this might be the going rate for downtown parking but it still seems somewhat steep.
- The hotel business center is actually a FedEx/Kinkos so you have to pay for basically everything.

We loved the location of this hotel. It's located between the Hancock tower and the Shed aquarium. We walked to both locations from the hotel. The concierge desk offered wonderful advise for activities and restaurants. Only warning, parking is pricey!

My wife and I stayed here a few days after Christmas and found the hotel to be very clean, large rooms and in a great location. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The location is deal for walking throughout the City or to catch the elevated train, with stop right next door. We didn't have a car so did not have to pay the excessive parking charge - but that is typical at any Chicago hotel.
The only negative was that the business center is not open on the weekends, however we were able to check in for our flight and print out boarding passes.

Good hotel for the price and location. Went here for a New Years getaway. Got an upgrade to club level. Room was nice and clean with a huge bathroom and plenty of towels. Could still here the "L" train even on the 26th floor! I learned later to ask for a river view instead. Bathroom door interfered with the closet and room doors making it difficult to get around sometimes. Overall the room was a bit smaller than I am used to for a Marriott property. Pool and spa were nice but crowded with kids on this busy weekend. Got a massage and it was average. Catch 35 next door was great for dinner and we found another little Thai spot called Ma & I on S.Michigan which was fantastic and reasonably priced! Room service was under staffed or over taxed on NY Day. They missplaced our order originally and then it was late in coming once we called. Asked for service for 2 and when it arrived only had settings for one so had to wait for them to return with more.

We chose this hotel because of its excellent location in the Loop. The location proved invaluable as the weather was very cold and snowy. Still we were able to get everywhere we needed to go by CTA bus and EL train, both of which stop right outside the hotel. I cannot say enough good about the location. If I stay here again, the location will be the reason.

The rest of the hotel was nice but nothing spectacular. The staff was friendly and helpful. Internet cost was $14 per day and room service was way overpriced. The price we paid was a little higher than other similar hotels in the area but the proximity to transit routes made up for this. The noise from the EL train was noticiable but did not keep us awake as we were on the 21st floor.
