“Deliciousness”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2012

My partner and I visited XOCO on our trip to Chicago. I ordered Wood-Roasted Chicken Pozole Caldo (Soup) and he had the Chipotle Chicken Torta (Sandwich). While I would say the soup was very large and very hot it was not the meal in a bowl they tout it to be. I was hungry again in about an hour or two after eating this. While it did have some fresh vegetables and wonderful flavor from the spices and fresh broth it needed something more substantial in it like rice and beans or perhaps serving chips and salsa on the side. I would not say it was worth the $11.50 it cost! My partners torta on the other hand was outstanding. Fresh, crispy, and bursting with flavor. That red chile sauce they give you on the side to dip in is addicting! We also ordered a cup of Classic Hot Chocolate and a glass of fresh Limeade. While the hot chocolate was great on a rainy day it was definitely not the sweet hot cocoa we typically think of in America. Wish I could have added a little sugar to it, but it was an experience none the less. The limeade is probably some of the best I have ever had. So refreshing and paired so well with both of our dishes. I would definitely return to XOCO, but would perhaps order a torta instead of a caldo next time.

“Cheap way to eat at a Rick Bayless place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2012

Arrived a few minutes before 8a opening on a Wednesday in case there was a line. This wasn't a problem, but we did get to chat with a few others that had the same idea. The breakfast menu is small, but classic - empanadas, chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, chorizo torta. The also have a list of good coffees and Mexican hot chocolates. Everything was good, and I didn't feel unhealthy after I left - there wasn't the overload of cheese and other goop you might get other places. The price was right - chilaquiles, empanadas and Aztec chocolate was only $13. Be warned - these chocolates are not your mamma's hot chocolate!

“quick, excellent mexican sandwiches and soups!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2012

went here based on rec from hotel and it had awesome mexican sandwiches. think panini but mexcian ingredients. I tried the milanesa one (chicken cutlet with avocado sauce and peppers) which was incredible. sandwiches are grilled/pressed and cheese melts. also got a sunday duck soup special which was great. my friend got the short rib torta which also looked great. all tortas are around maybe $8-12 so for a quick cheap meal this is the place to go. and a quick tip - usually there is wicked long line so rather than wait and eat in the restaurant go immediately to the cashier and they will take your order to-go right away then walk to the riverfront and eat your torta with a view! highly recommend. also much easier (and cheaper) to eat here than Frontera Grill.
