I think the Palmer House Hilton is an excellent choice for a hotel in the downtown core, especially for people who have never visited Chicago. The hotel is located in the heart of the subway loop allowing easy access to every subway line in the city.

It is for that reason that the location of this hotel in my opinion is fantastic. The RED line subway station is located right at the side entrance to the hotel (10 ft away). The BLUE and ORANGE lines are just a short walking distance away. This is perfect for those coming into Chicago from either MDW or ORD airports. One subway directly to the hotel without transfers to buses or other lines.

The 146 bus stops at the side entrance as well, allowing a 10 minute ride on one bus only, to access to the Field museum, Shedd aquarium, Alder Planetarium and Soldier's field. Michigan Avenue is a 2-3 minute walk away with the art gallery and Clould city / Millenium park being a short 15 minute walk.

Regarding the hotel itself, I found it to be great value for the money. The main lobby is beautiful with excellent artistic decor. There is a lobby bar which always seemed to be busy as well as couches for people to sit down and drink. Very social vibe to the lobby. I did not try the in-house restaurant but it always seemed busy.

The service was exceptional...anytime I asked for directions or for something for the room my needs were immediately addressed. The staff was very friendly, from reception, down to the cleaning staff.

The room I was given (room 21169) was very small and with no view, however it was clean. You can tell the rooms themselves are a little dated. The bathroom was small as well but otherwise clean. Wi-fi is not free, unless youre a HHonours Points member.

Overall a fantastic choice for a hotel if you’re in Chicago on business or as a tourist, especially as a first time tourist.

We stayed at The Palmer House Hilton recently to enjoy easy access to The Art Institute. My kids LOVED this stay. We were on "The Executive Level". This level provides snacks, appetizers, and desserts. My kids REALLY enjoyed this. The pool has floating toys so there is no need to bring them with. This trip was great for EVERY member of the family. Highly recommend!!

Room Tip: Ask for The Executive Level.

This is a great hotel. We always seem to find amazing rates on this hotel by using Hotwire (4 star hotel in the Loop). The hotel lobby is classic and beautiful. The rooms tend to be small but the amenities are very comfy and modern. Location is great. The red line L station is right outside the door. All other L lines are within walking distance. Close to Millennium Park.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms by the elevators as these tend to be louder. Also, to avoid a really small room, it mig...

This hotel is beautiful. A beautiful Art Deco lobby with nice leather chairs to lounge in and a beautiful painted ceiling. As a Hilton Gold member, my room was upgraded to the Executive Floor and got two queen size beds with two bathrooms and a huge living room area. It was a nice treat. Plus we got free breakfast every morning and appetizers at night.
The only negatives were the bathrooms were small (not a lot of counter space for all my toiletries) and the bar wines were very expensive ($16 for a glass of Mathew Fritz Chardonnay) - retails for $28/bottle. Next time would just go to Miller's Pub next door for a more reasonably priced wine.
Overall the hotel was a great experience and would definitely go there again.

Room Tip: See if they have rooms with bigger bathrooms
