“A good value”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2012

This was my second time staying at this hotel, both times for two nights. My impressions are pretty much the same. The hotel is clean, spacious, and nicely appointed. But the beds are junk and uncomfortable. The pillows are cheap. The linens are cheap. I don't mind their cutting back here and there -- their rates are very good -- but on beds and bedding? The parking is free -- another benefit. For us the main benefit is that the hotel is very convenient to the University of Chicago via Lake Shore Drive. The location of the hotel is in no-man's-land, but that is OK. We will return because of the convenience factor.

Room Tip: The king room with a sitting area is very nice, but you can't watch TV from the sitting area whi...

Had many issues but THE MANAGER CORRECTED THE PROBLEM ABOVE AND BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS. It suited our purpose of being close to McCormick place convetion center. We saved on cab fare and they have free parking. No safety issues walking from hotel to convention center. Walked down the street for dinner with no problem. The rooms are very large and comfortable.
The major issue was the noise from the bar the two out of three nights we were there. We were on the third floor and it kept us awake past midnight and we had to be up early for meetings! There was no hot water one morning but it was fixed by the time we got back that night. We will try to stay here again next year but will definately being asking for a room far from the bar/restaurant.

Been here a few times and for the price, you can't beat this place. Of course, it's in the city do you do have the L, and traffic, but you also have FREE parking. The rooms are a nice size with large bathrooms. Both the cafe and bar are overpriced with lousy service. It meets my needs for have an inexpensive place to sleep in Chicago.

Stayed there for the 2 nights in late March. I didn't find the neighbourhood to be all that scary. True it's not really close to anything but it's less than 10 minutes to walk to the Red Line station called Cermack/Chinatown and that gets you downtown easily or to any other connecting line you need. The room was large and very clean, excellent shower, average fridge and tv. Wasn't bothered by street noise at all. Overpriced breakfast at the onsite restaurant but pleasant service. Would happily stay there again.

I have stayed at this hotel twice, in March and November 2011. The rooms are very good, but not luxury.

The neighborhood and safety is a subject of many reviewers' comments. I walked to the convention center (15-20 minute walk), sometimes at night. As a middle-aged male, I was not terribly worried. Yet Chicago is a city which is similar to dozens of other US cities--you should always be careful. You will need to take a taxi from most hotels in the city to get to most destinations. Even if you drive to your destination in Chicago, parking is rather expensive. The free parking at Chicago South Loop Hotel is an infrequent amenity in Chicago.

The price of this hotel is considerably lower than other hotels within several miles! So, I see this hotel as a great find and value.
