Great locale within the Millenium Park and walking distance from downtown Loop, Lake Michigan, Chicago river, the Bean, good hotels and eateries and shopping areas. Modern and ancient exhibits including from India and South Asia. Swami Vivekanand spoke in the World conference of Religions in their hall 150 years ago

We had not been to the Art Institute since the new modern wing opened so it was great fun to explore the architecture exhibit (try the rope benches) and eat in the cafe in that wing of the museum.

Certainly ranks as a major art museum in my book. Highlights start with an extensive collection of surrealism (e.g. Dali, Magritte) and 20th Century American. Older European art and what I deem historic relics are also on display (not my cup of tea). When I visited there was a special exhibition of photography in New York that was well-presented and thorough.

You will need to spend at least 3 hours here. This is a huge museum. Go on a rainy day.

Tip: Check out Millennium Park next to the museum right before or after to get some sunshine or air. The Bean is a must photo opp.

Tip: Next to the train lines, just a few blocks away. Can't miss it.

Definitely worth the $18 I paid and I would visit again the next time I'm in Chicago.

Had been there especially to see the place where Swami Vivekananda gave his lecture on Vedanta. The staff (leady but I don't know her name but have her pic) was very helpful and informative.
But liked the marvelous enormous collections. Will surely visit again with much more time in hand in the next opportunity.

Dont rush this huge store of art treasures. There are massive collections here of both modern, classic and ancient artworks. You need a full day here, this is a global scale collection, probably as good as anything outside of Europe.
