Haven't done an all inclusive since we used to holiday with the kids.
We wanted a week away with no hassles, sun and warmth.
We got that.

Riu Toureg is a huge resort catering for thousands guests from all over Europe and Scandinavia.
It's kept very clean throughout all public areas, restaurants, bars, beaches, rooms and toilets.

Staff are excellent. Always very helpful and with a smile. A lot of places could learn from that.

Some of the evening entertainment, tribute singers and dance acts were good. Audience participation acts were a little too Pontins but a lot of people enjoyed it so my opinion probably isn't valid! Kids entertainment every evening seemed to go down well.

Beaches are stunning. Miles and miles of soft sand. Plenty of sun beds on the beach with hessian wind breaks and ypung palms to counter the occasional but always warm wind.

No shortage of sun beds on the beach or poolside and plenty of shade if needed.

Food was a challenge.
Massive buffet choice but much of it was over cooked. I understand why, but it meant that a lot of the meat dishes were less appetising than they looked. There was always something to eat though and the restaurant staff manage the places brilliantly considering the number of guests they deal with and the mess they create.

You can book to eat in the local restaurant, Italian or Asian. The Asian was the best food we had at the hotel. Really good. Book early though, they get booked up almost as soon as the new batch of guests arrive. I'd recommend booking when you check-in.

All in all it did the job for us.
Not much on Boa Vista but quad excursions are a good way to see even more beautiful and untouched beaches and we were lucky that this time of year was good for a short whale watching trip that included drinks and snacks and whales!

Looking for some winter sun and to recharge your batteries on an unspoilt island with miles of beaches? you`ve come to the right place!
Looking for laminated menus of chips and beans and Flannigans irish bar ,you wont find them here!

Flight time from gatwick to Boa vista was 5hrs 30mins on a boeing 757-200, 3 seats on the left 3 seats on the right,we travelled as a group of 7 with 3 kids, breakfast was served on the way out and lunch on the way back all gratis!
Take some headphones or ipad etc to kill time as no entertainment on plane

Transfer from Rabil(airport) to Riu toureg takes about 30 mins in a nice new Tui coach

Check in was smooth,2 coaches arrived similtaneously but there was around 10 reception staff working hard to process everyone which took about 15 mins
The Hotel itself is big but not overwhelming, plenty of manicured grounds to walk around and lose yourself,a couple of tennis courts and a 5 a side football pitch to work off your breakfast or lunch
We never used the Gym but my wife did venture into the spa for a neck/back/shoulder massage for £30 which is by no means expensive.

Our group booked 2 family rooms,we were allocated block 6 which is virtually in the centre of the resort. Rooms are large and spacious with plenty of space for clothes, storage etc
Rooms are dark and dated and a little tired but we dont go on holiday to sit in our rooms
Tv and aircon in rooms with a few english channels for downtime with kids
beds are uncomfortable, our first matress was made of concrete so complained and was given another matress ,not Tempur but a little better than the first, ask for additional pillows if you require them

The pool area is big with swim up bar and the water was a pleasant temperature better in the afternoon as the sun had time to heat it up, my son spent all day in there.
Be careful in certain areas as the pool tiles are missing and several kids cut their feet on the exposed areas
People have mentioned that you can grab a sunbed at anytime of day which is true but if you want prime real estate in the first row by the pool you need to get up with the birds,i`m an early riser and was putting towels out at 6.30am and plenty of people were up and about.

No need to take beach towels as the hotel provides them! they use a token system to redeem your towels, exchange by 5pm for new ones for the following day, towel shack reopens at 9am following morning.

The beach is superb, glorious white sand and totally unspoilt, Lifeguard on the beach and lots of loungers with wind breakers! the red flag was up and this is due to the undercurrent pulling you into the water!
We all went swimming in the sea along with loads of other people and the kids paddled where the waves had broken! if you`re a half competant swimmer you will have no issues

Feeding times is when it gets exciting,we were lucky enough to reside near the Bereber grill bar which you do not need to book, in the evening it was tranquill and placid and doubles as the afternoon pool bar where its a lot busier and the early breakfast area where you can grab a bite to eat around 6.45am
The main restaurant is where you see all the fun!
We dined there once, its like a feeding frenzy in there with people under the impression they will not be fed again for weeks so they load their plates up to capacity whilst cosuming their booty on route back to the table. Do not expect to walk in a straight line in this restaurant

Asian restaurant was nice but book the day you arrive and Boa vistan restaurant was buffet for starter and table service for main! again equally very pleasant and a change from the other food being consumed elsewhere

The food in general is good but variety is lacking and becomes monotonous after a week
Drinks are local, wine according to my wife is palatable although on plane back she had a glass of savignon blanc and looked like she was in ecstasy
Beer again is ok its not perroni more a cheap castlemain XXXX but is wet and free
Cocktails are bland and uninspiring we stuck to pina coladas as they had the least aftertaste of all the cocktails
amaretto or baileys (local) are available too which werent to bad

Finally the evening entertainment, as other reviewers have stated its so bad its laughable! i watched two people slaughter an Elton John song to the point we all sang along
its 9.15pm to 10.15pm and helps you wind down for bed i guess
anyone wanting to carry on can go to the karaoke bar until 12 then onto the nightclub until 2am

We stayed here 27th March until April 3rd weather was sunny everyday bit of cloud in the morning that burns off by10am, pleasant breeze, but be careful as it can be deceptive, lots of prawn/tomato like people by the pool, keep slapping on the sun cream

In summary 7 days was enough to recharge our batteries top up our tans and let the kids blow off some steam!
would I stay here again? Probably yes in march, april, may for some guaranteed sunshine

One final note, the hotel is starting to show signs of becoming tired with maintenance lacking in certain area ....ie pool, rooms
This doesnt detract from a good holiday but does need attention the 5 star rating is a little ambitious as anyone who has stayed at a 5 star resort would be a little dissapointed here.
But we all know 5 stars at the grand is a lot more expensive than 5 stars at Riu toureg :-)

And regrettably, not in a really good way. This is a strange place indeed. Boa Vista is a stark moonscape land, beautiful in its way, but harshly so. Rocks, sand and water, that’s about it. (It’s obviously different when the rains come). The ocean, though is breath-taking in both colour and behaviour. On the day we arrived, there were 10 foot rollers crashing on the beach which made for an impressive spectacle. The hotel is situated………..well placed really, in the middle of nowhere, by the Ocean. You approach it, (after an ‘exciting’ coach journey from the lovely little airport), via what is loosely, a road in places. The hotel appears like some mirage out of a wind-blown (of which, more later) desert. It reminded me instantly of Beau Geste, only the Carry On one. It’s built like a kids sand castle, made with those special buckets you could buy at the beach tat shop. Once the coach drops you off, be prepared for the typically British queue at check in. It was a painless process for us, apart from the 3 girls in front using up about 25 minutes of everyone else’s time asking stupid questions. Anyway, once done we were given a room in ‘Block 5’. This had a lovely view of rooftops, was dark and dated, we were not happy, so we rejected it. We were moved without fuss, the next morning to ‘Block 9’, which was newer, well-appointed and with much better views, we liked it immediately and were now much happier. We did consider paying the extra for the adult’s only section, but concluded that all in all, there was very little advantage to be had. Most of the people that were in that section ended up daily at our pool bar, moaning about the miserable little ‘extras’ they actually had paid for. This is a TUI rated five star hotel, it wouldn’t get 5 stars by any other method of judging! The food is very, very average, we stopped taking breakfast after a few days as the only things you could get hot, were water and a fried egg. We ate mostly in the snack restaurant, near the main pool. The main pool is obviously very busy and had the tone of Benidorm; group pool gymnastics, serried ranks of loungers and lots of giggling and shouting. It has a nice pool bar at the side, but not a place to have a quiet drink. We ate here only because we hated the main eatery, which for us was too big, too noisy and full of people on auto pilot darting around grabbing stuff like they hadn’t seen any food in a week! The speciality restaurants are a bit of a misnomer. We saw the same food in some as served in the main ‘canteen’. Do though, try the Cape Verdean and the Asian, both very good. Don’t take the early seating in these restaurants if you can avoid it. Come 9 0’clock, they will ask you to leave to make room for the second seating, finished or not. This was the first time I’ve been asked to leave a restaurant, well, sober anyway. The drinks on offer are the usual for ‘all inclusive’, rough or tasteless and on some occasions, both. I stuck to Port, as far as I could see, it was the only thing to come from a bottle! Any serious wine lovers among you, please avoid all wine, trust me, it doesn’t come from a bottle and it will destroy your taste buds forever. The beaches are stunning, soft white sands and crashing waves make it great for an afternoon amble. You can go left or right from the hotel although the right hand turn will take you for miles. This brings me to the wind factor. The wind is strong and incessant and you need to be careful as it can sand blast your legs on a walk! There is a hairdresser in the hotel, for what reason I’m not sure, as soon as you walk outside of it, the however many quid’s worth of coiffure investment you just made will be away on the wind! You must take in some of the shows. Two were so bad they were excellent. Others are the usual mixture of song and dance and ‘local’ culture and were well executed and enjoyable. There’s not much to do on Boa Vista apart from stay at the hotel. The nearest ‘town’ is about 45 minutes away and good luck with that when you get there. We did quad biking and whale watching privately which I’ll review separately. One thing however, did stand out at the hotel and that was the staff. Unfailingly helpful, courteous and cheerful at all times. All in all, we eventually had a lovely restful break with nice sunny (but windy) weather. We grew to like the place and if your reason for going on holiday is to have a nice, simple relaxing time by a pool, drink in hand, in the sun then this place will suit you well and will fit the bill. If you need a little more excitement, well there’s always a night in with a box set, or you could go and watch one of the shows!

There is nowhere to go outside this hotel, wish I had checked this before booking but never mind the all inclusive was as expected based on the previous reviews. The holiday was good, hotel was clean (compliment to housekeeping for the interesting bed arrangements) and fairly well maintained. Staff were mostly polite, helpful and a thanks to the gardener who gave us a coconut, a small thing but our niece was very pleased.
Pool and bars are all great, pool areas could do with more shade as that is difficult to find in the afternoon but some of the best bar staff I've seen in a while, particularly the team that serve the bar in the middle of the entertainment square, they work so hard, totally on the ball and brilliant service. Entertainment was actually quite good, the x factor night was funny and these guys work hard to make sure everyone has a good holiday so it's worth a look.
My one issue would be it was too busy at peak meal times and I feel at bit short on the waiting staff and buffet chefs etc, particularly at breakfast or evening meals. There is a mention previously about booking the speciality restaurants early, good idea to book on arrival. Plenty food on offer for most tastes so you shouldn't really go hungry but I was bored at the end of the week.
Overall a fantastic week in the sun, no stress, beautiful beach and memorable.

This was our first trip abroad with our 19-month-old son and I will start by saying that we had a brilliant time. It worked really well for a family with a toddler and the staff there were all great. We were lucky to have great flights both ways, the only point of note being that we had very little food as we are vegetarian and were told we should have pre-ordered. Fair enough, so I spent half an hour scouring the TUI website while out there to sort something out for the way home, to no avail, so we went hungry again...

My main gripe is that TUI describe the resort as 5-Star: it is not. I believe that they refer to this as a local rating, but, unless you're going to ascribe to a universally recognised star system, this is pretty meaningless. Like I said, we had a great time, but I do think that the fact that TUI claim that it's 5 Star means that I need to critique it in this manner.

The rooms are pleasant and clean and I thoroughly recommend getting a suite for an extra £100 if you can afford it and are travelling with children. Our balcony wasn't in the sun during the day and it's dark at night, so we weren't really able to use this comfortably during nap/bedtime for our little one, so the lounge area was really handy. The sofa we had was possibly the most uncomfortable I've ever sat on and the pillows were laughable. When booking, I noticed a photo including mini travel products in the bathroom, so foolishly left my conditioner at home... is this sounding like 5 star accommodation yet?

The food was good for an all-inclusive (3.5 /4 star, absolute max) buffet - a wide range with many diets catered for, but it didn't really differ greatly each night so we did get a little bored of the same things each day. Our son is a brilliant eater but even he turned his nose up at the overcooked veggies. They do like to add meat to everything and on one occasion there were three different pastas but all had meat of some kind added. I asked if it was possible to have any without meat and the brilliant chefs whipped up something delicious for us. Very impressed. There are a number of restaurants but we had a bit of a nightmare with these. We tried to book them all on the first day and were more or less laughed at for even trying. We managed to get the Italian for our final night but that was it. We noticed that the Grill restaurant was always half empty, despite being told it was fully booked, and we did get invited in to this one evening when walking past. I'm not sure why the other restaurants are so inaccessible.

The biggest con was that the pools were absolutely freezing. I wouldn't have minded so much if it were just the two of us, but it really was too cold for a little one. He managed to paddle but could only spend a few minutes swimming, after which we had to get him changed really quickly as there's a constant cool wind. I was pretty annoyed about this, as it stated when booking that the pools are heated in winter. I also heard that the adults only pool was heated while we were there?!

It's also worth noting that the sea has a red flag almost all year - probably not rough enough to deter anyone used to the British coast, but you wouldn't be covered by insurance if injured while the red flag is up. I feel this should, again, be made clear at booking.

Boa Vista itself really is in the middle of nowhere and there is very little outside of the resort - we were aware of this at booking and it wasn't a problem for us as we were just looking for somewhere to relax and didn't really want to venture too far with a toddler. The sun was lovely but it was windy for almost all of the time, making it feel cooler than the average 25 degrees.

All in all, we had a great trip, but I think TUI should reconsider their rating, so people know what to expect. I think my review would have been far less critical if this had been the case.
