This was a very enjoyable experience. Our guide was George, grandson of the founder of this company. He provided a wonderful narration of the history of sponges (I had no idea there were several grades) and the sponging industry in Tarpon Springs and gave a good description of what diver, his gear, and all that he was doing on every step of his dive to get a sponge. I didn't know what to expect, but I was thrilled with it.

Adult cost = $10
Kids = $5.

Very worth the money.

This is a 30 minute tour to learn about the reason you came to Tarpon Springs, Sponges! They only charge $10 per person, very reasonable for all you learn from this trip. The diver was amazing and the demonstration was the icing on the cake. This is a one time, have to do experience when you come to this area.....perfect!

This is a very good educational tour. They have a senior discount $9.00 each. Any seat would be good.

We took a short boat ride and learned about sponge harvesting. It was very interesting. There was a diver that demonstrated how they dive for sponges. This has been around a long time and so have I and I really enjoyed it. Nice town to visit.

This activity is a pleasant and educational way to appreciate the industry that started Greek immigration to this area in the early 1900's. The crew and diver, we were told, are all volunteers who operate this tour as a public relations effort on behalf of the community around the historic sponge docks. (Of course they don't object to receiving tips.) Our crew members were all retirement aged Greek Americans. They did a great job of explaining all aspects of sponge hunting both historically and up to the present (Tarpon Springs still produces over half the world's natural sponges.) The diver is a younger professional diver who donned an old-tech (1920's style) diving outfit. On the cruise, we motored a short way on the river to a deep spot where crew and diver demonstrated a sponge dive, bringing up an actual living sponge from the rocky bottom. Everyone was happy to answer lots of questions and we all learned a lot.
