First visit this year and the last. I ordered fish and chip's and the fish was flavourless and soggy, the portion size was smaller than my last visit and they have put the prices up, it felt like I was paying for the redecoration not the food.

Thank you for your review.
We are sorry that your fish and chips was not up to our usual standard.
We now cook all our food fresh to order with high quality local ingredients.

We do hope that you try us again so we can show you what we can do.

We decided to try the newly refurbished restaurant

We had an early seat and were greeted warmly so it started well

The prices are slightly higher than other local places but gorgeous weather amazing view definitely was worth it and we wanted to see what it was like as this could become a regular place for us to come as all of our family and friends live local so we were hopeful.

We ordered the roast chicken. Portion size was great and very tasty, sides were again pricey but great portion and different so this wouldn’t have put us off and were even looking to when we could next come back

As the restaurant got busy it became clear the attention of the young inexperienced staff were else where and we became less impressed. Small errors that increased a bit of frustration and showed a lack of care, offer of condiments that never arrived, long delay (forgotten) on dessert. Even 2attempts for the bill which lead to us approaching the bar staff to pay which also got messy with mixed up items

When we finished and sat out side for some fresh air it was really sad to see a young family who parked their bikes and were going to get a drink being moved on by the manager ‘as the tables were purely for the chequers use’ bit presumptive ... would you like a drink and encouraged to use your bar would have been a nicer approach in the first instance and possibly more business for them

Over all great food great venue just some finesse and improved service could really make the difference in return business

Hello Clare,

Thank you for the review.

We are glad that you like our generous portion sizes and our very tasty fresh food.

We are sorry that the service slowed, but we were extremely busy and the new staff are still getting used to the table service we now offer, and new tills that have recently been introduced.

Unfortunately we do ask people who have purchased drinks at the pub next door and then use our furniture to return back next door as we believe this is fairer on our customers, we don't ask people to move on until we are certain they are not our customers.

We do hope you will come back soon and let us show you how good our service is.

Haven't visited Chequers for a few years and glad we went again. Great food, brilliant service and quite reasonable. cost. The roast lamb was great and only dropped to a four star because the roasties weren't quite as crispy as I hoped. Saying that the portion sizes were good and the views are really lovely. Go on a dry summer day and plan to go for a walk before lunch along the river. Best walk is downstream through some lovey countryside.

Hi Robert,

Thank you for the review.

We are so please that you like the new look Chequers. We are glad you liked the Lamb Roast and will see if i can get the Chef to 'crisp up' the roasties a bit more.

We do have some lovely walks along the riverside, but we do suggest you try and book a table as we only have a limited number of tables available and would hate you to miss out.

We went down to the river for a quick drink and there are 2 pubs here. We first went into The Old Lock and Weir "Ale" House. Very disappointed!! I remember when this used to be good pub with several real ales. Not any more. Hidden amongst all the taps of lager there was ONE hand pub. I didn't fancy having a pint here because I was sceptical whether they would keep a good pint so we left and went to The Chequers next door. What a difference!!! We were warmly welcomed as we came in and then shown to a table. They had 3 beers on draught and the Youngs Special was excellent. They were serving Sunday lunch which looked very nice so instead of just stopping for a quick drink we had lunch as well. It was very good indeed and as for the service they couldn't do enough for you. We shall certainly be going there again.

Steaks were cooked to our liking and tasty, why do chefs put tomatoes on our plates with steaks? We both think they are fruit of the devil so waste of time giving them to us. Very few chips, a tiny amount of salad and grilled mushroom, I had my husbands mushroomin exchange for some chips! Very odd dessert choices, nothing that appealed. Well done for having dry martini. More chips please.

Thank you for your review.

We are glad that you enjoyed your steaks and i will talk to our head chef about putting more chips with the steaks.

As well as doing 'pub classics' on our menu we try to be a little bit more adventurous hence the 'odd dessert choices', we are always open to suggestions so if there is something you would like to see on our menu please let us know.

We hope that you return soon for a dry martini and if you do dine with us ask your server to leave off any 'fruits of the devil'.
