Last night was our fourth visit here. La Dolce does not serve liquor so my wife and I began with two glasses of white wine. We ordered a clam and mussel app which was very good. I had linguine with clams and cherry tomatoes, the latter being a pleasant addition to this traditional dish. My wife had the veal saltimbocca and we shared a good bottle of Amarone. We finished with coffee and complimentary lemoncello. All in all a very good experience.

Not to be confused with Dolce Italia which is located in the same vicinity, La Dolce Vita is a treasure of authentic Italian fare. One is greeted at the door by their gracious hostess, Tina, who, along with her chef husband, are the owners. Each dish we had was of the finest ingredients and authentic preparation. Each of the pastas are made in-house and they are delicious. The seafood was fresh and not "over sauced" which allowed the flavor of the fish to be enjoyed. Their menu is varied and appealing. Also, the service was attentive yet inabtrusive.

Tina and staff made our evening once again a wonderful experience. Wines, meals and her mother-in-law’s recipe and for limoncello topped off the evening. Parking can be difficult if a later evening reservation is made.

We are always on the lookout for small family owned restaurants, and discovered this Italian gem on our latest trip to Sarasota. This husband and wife team--he's the chef and she runs the house--relocated from the Naples area to Sarasota over a year ago, and have brought authentic Italian recipes with them. We started off with a delicious bottle of a white Italian Pecorino (like the cheese) wine recommended by our server: light bodied, crisp and perfectly dry for our seafood entrees. After sharing a light arugula salad, my wife had the grilled octopus dinner, while I enjoyed the fabulous Corvina fish served Piccata style. My portion was delicious; moist and tender with the lemon butter piccata sauce just highlighting rather than overwhelming the mild fish flavor. My wife's octopus portion was large enough to share, with the tender octopus having just a hint of the light char that gives this grilled seafood dish it's characteristic flavor. Dinner was accompanied by classic Italian bread served with olive oil and grated cheese. The food was great, the small restaurant bright and cheery, and the overall experience delightful. Thank you Tina and Mauro for a great evening!!

La Dulce Vita

I ate with friend and our Roman friends to La Dolce Vita after Roman friend man read newspaper story on the place. What a find. The place has not the normal in Italian fare, which was refreshing.

We were given bread with garlic oil and cheese, some balsamic was offered but no takers. Bread was real Italian bread hard outside, soft inside and hot! We then order 3 apps to pass and a salad for Roman friend woman. The apps were calamari with anchovy and capers, mussels and clams with lemon garlic oil and young mozzarella with tomato and prosciutto salad. All were fabulous. The salad of romaine was fresh and went quickly.

Friend had osso buco special- a heavy chuck of juicy soft veal on a richly cheesed risotto. Roman friend woman had a special app of eggplant rollitini- just like your nana’s and an entree of mussels in a bath of tomato chunks and garlic- mussels were large and plump. Roman man friend had a platter of mixed grilled octopus with a greek salsa- soft pieces of tentacles laced with tzatziki and a side of homemade linguini with red sauce. I had shrimp and asparagus in a garlic vegetable sauce with homemade pappardelle- 8 large soft firm shrimp and pencil thin asparagus.

The food was more than wonderful, the service was great. Each meal is prepared when ordered except for osso buco and lasagna so there is a wait. The cost is $20 plus on apps and meals with a few a bit lower, but extremely worth it. Owner speaks to you at each segment of the meal and explains how they make your food. No dessert as we were all full. A great pick and a great find, I hope/plan to be back when I’m in town again.
