My boyfriend and I both work at resorts in Palm Beach and always hear how great Renato's is. I was very excited to have authentic Italian since my boyfriend is from the northeast and always talks about how good it is in NY/NJ. We were seated at a nice quiet table with a great view of the restaurant. We were definitely younger than the majority of the crowd but still felt very comfortable. There were 4 different gentlemen that served our table so we were a little confused on who our actual waiter was.
We ordered the roasted artichokes to start with and it was good. Not great, just good. Whenever I go to a new restaurant I always ask the waiter for recommendations. He recommended the Tagliolini alla Bolognese. My boyfriend ordered the Bistecca di Manzo. The food came very quickly and I took a bite of my meal and I immediately thought it tasted like a pre-made meal. My boyfriend loved his. I asked a gentlemen for the menu again as I wanted to order something different. He didn't ask if my current meal was okay or inquire to why I was asking for the menu again. No big deal. I ordered the yellowfish tuna and it came quickly as well. He asked me if I wanted him to take away my pasta dish and my boyfriend told him he could put it in a box and we would take it home. We never asked for it to be removed from the bill nor expected it to be since we were taking it home. My boyfriend finished his meal with the exception of fat from the steak left on the plate and my dish had no food left. The waiter came back and asked my boyfriend if he could box the remaining steak to go (just fat). I didn't think anything about it because I have known people to take home fat to add to their pet's food. He then came to me and asked if I was finished (my plate was clean) and if I'd like to take the plate to go. I was appalled and felt like I was being mocked for asking him to box the first meal. I understand I am young and he may have been making a joke but it came off as inappropriate for the setting we were in, an upscale restaurant. Both my boyfriend and I work at a Forbes 5 Star resort and are very aware of what is considered excellent service and what is considered inappropriate. Giving the setting of the restaurant, the waiter came off as very sarcastic.
We finished our meal with the apple tart and it was excellent. The apple tart is the only reason I did not rate it with one star. I am not the type of person to ask for a manager and instead take experiences to shape where I spend my time and money in the future. Simply stated, we will not return. I would much rather spend a nice Palm Beach evening at Buccan.
Side note: The valet attendants were excellent!! I am not sure if they are associated with the restaurant or not.
