“Cool property but the rooms are not great”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

We loved seeing animals right from our balcony. We also loved the programs with the rangers. But the room was small and dark. Next time I might just visit the hotel and stay somewhere else.

Stayed in March 2012 and everything about this hotel was simply amazing. The pool was very clean as well as the room. Housekeeping was great and took towels when needed and always replaced toiletries on a daily basis. Never without anything in room. Mattresses were very comfortable and didn't feel like i had to look under sheets for surprise visitors while there. Our room was a pool view room, and while the trees where blocking the view of the pool it was a great location. The only gripe I can say that I had was about the food, but knowing that most of the restaurants are African inspired, we knew that going in to it. The bus rides to the parks where always there with in the 20 min mark and the distance was not as bad as some make it. Very easy to get on and off. The gift shop had a ton of items such as milk, bread and the usual Disney gifts. All the staff was very friendly and accomodating. Would def stay here again!

I am giving this hotel an excellent rating because it was much nicer than I expected since Disney hotels are not known for being comparable to real "luxury" hotels. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating to each request from the moment we arrived to the last moments when we caught the Disney bus back to the airport. The rooms were clean. They aren't fancy but were in good condition and had a nice balcony overlooking the animals. The lobby is beautiful and there are firepits and waterfalls which add to the ambiance. We were pleased with the "club floor" extras since we could have breakfast there every morning before going to the parks. The pool looked nice and was quite large but we weren't there to swim. There are buses to each park but be aware that they get crowded at peak times and the ride to Magic Kingdom takes a while. One of the few negatives to the hotel is the quick service dining restaurant which I suppose is normal for Disney but I would prefer a place to get a better meal at lunchtime with table service or a less chaotic environment. I will probably stay here again since it is a little less than the other "deluxe" resorts and seems to be more updated. We did go to Jiko which was very good also. We did not go to the buffet but it seemed to be very busy.

The Exceptionally Good:
The animals..... To stay at a hotel where the animals are right outside your bedroom window is truly spectacular, Sure, they put their food where you will get the best views, so it's a little "staged", but it is still wild zebras, giraffes, etc.

The guides/advisors..... People directly from Africa, who are hired for a year or so, to come work at Disney and share their life, their knowledge and their passion for these wonderful animals. Grace in particular was wonderful and treated my wife and I like long lost friends. She is from Botswana, and when we go to Africa, we will try to visit her. She was that friendly!

The hotel itself.. Beautifully decorated, with actual African artifacts. We were told it is the largest and most valuable collection outside of Africa itself. Wonderful, picturesque building.

The food... Wow....Yummy with the perfect amount of exotic ingredients. Brought home many warm memories and recipe ideas.

The Good:
The hotel lobby bar. Nice location, decent servers, but tended to be pretty noisy around dinner until 10pm or so. Still a nice place for a drink and a snack.

The OK:
The actual rooms... Not anything special really. On the small side. But the views........ :-)

What you need to know:
People, you are on a Disney property. They don't do "small". Sure you walk a lot. Get over this "issue" and just walk. It's worth the effort. The building is setup in type of layout so everyone gets a chance to see the animals.

Try the pool area at least once if it's not 100+ degrees. It is a very nice area and the hot-tubs are very secluded and nice.

Eat at Boma for Breakfast at least once and try something outside your comfort zone. It's worth it!! Dinner is wonderful as well. We didn't try the high-end restaurant, as we simply couldn't see how the value would be any better.

Bring your camera. Obviously, right???

All in all, this was one of our top 3 experiences anywhere. Worth it, if even only once.

Room Tip: Any facing "inwards". Ask for that. Not sure on the "grade" of the rooms.

Stayed here for two weeks and did not regret our choice.
We booked a standard room but were lucky enough to be upgraded to a savannah room, much to my daughters amazement.
Nothing like waking up at 6am to giraffes feeding next to your balcony!!
The staff cant do enough to help in typical Disney fashion.
This is exactly what you would expect from a deluxe resort. We had a very happy two weeks here.
Lots of activities to do, and memory beads to collect when completing the activities. Always rangers on hand to tell stories, and lectures on animals etc.
Look out for marshmallow roasting and stories at sunset! Lots of fun. Pool size more than adequate for the size of the hotel if you fancy a day by the pool.
It is heated October onwards which really helps. There's a waterslide for the kids and plenty of poolside activities for them too. Dotted around the pool in quiet shady spots are heated jacuzzis which are lovely.
One of our favourite things was the outdoor movie showing at night!
The main restaurant , Mara does get busy. It worth utilising. The breakfast selection is very good. The quick service restaurant is equally as good. Portion sizes are excellent. Jiko, the fine dining restaurant is well worth a visit. Have reviewed seperately.
We did hear people moaning about the room sizes, but as Brits we felt it was more than adequate , housing two double beds in it!!
The transport links are worth a mention. Although the hotel is one of the furthest situated hotels from the parks, the transport links are excellent and you should not be out off the hotel because of this. We had a car and make use of the benefit of free parking around the whole of the Disney resort.
If you're lucky enough to get Disney dining plan thrown in with the hotel for free, take it!! There is more than enough food on the plan offered with a deluxe hotel and we couldn't eat all our credits by the end of the two weeks and we tried!
