“Celebrating our 10th anniversary”
Reviewed 22 April 2012

My husband and I were looking for a tropical-like place to spend our 10th anniversary and found just the place! While we loved our overall experience, I'll list what we loved and what we would have changed about the vacation.

Loved:
* Gorgeous landscape! The moment you cross over the bridge to Captiva the landscape dramatically changes.
*The view from our beach villa
*Comfortable Bed
*Customer service - we were originally placed in a villa right beside the noisy pool so we asked to be switched since it was our 10th anniversary and we wanted a quiet place. Someone was to our room within 10 minutes to take us to another room.
*Staying on the south side so we could relax without the crowds
*Beach Chairs and umbrellas provided for the guests

Dislikes:
*A fresh coat of paint would have done wonders to our villa. While it was pretty clean, a few simple things like paint and a good "spring cleaning" would have made the stay much more enjoyable.
*Expensive food and groceries
*While the location was wonderful, we were disappointed that the accommodations were not as nice as the website presents and definitely not worth the salty price we paid. The landscape of the island makes up for it, though.

Since we were simply coming to enjoy the time away together without the kids, we spent a lot of time on the beach instead of the resort activities. We'd definitely love to return sometime in the future.

Room Tip: If you'd like a romantic trip for two, the beach villas are on the quieter south side.

Stayed in north harbour hotel room. Great views of marina, manatees, ospreys & dolphins. Comfortable room and large bathroom with small balcony. Enjoyed the beach more than the pool complex which was extremely busy and very noisy. Beach staff very friendly with good bar and lunch options. Used the Ships Store for quick breakfast option, friendly staff. Hired bikes and used the tram to get to southern end of complex. Biggest disappointment was restaurants for evening meals. Few options on resort and one was closed a couple of nights. Expected better for the price and front of house staff gave away our reserved table one night! Manager could do with upskilling.

My family of 4 (2 kids: 9 & 5) spent 4 nights. Perfect for families. Ideal location vs other places since the resort is not separated (beach vs rooms) by any main roads. It is a big resort, so plan your stay according to your preferences. Based on other TripAdvisor reviewers (Thank you!) we chose the north-side of the Island and stayed at the Haborside waterview at the Pointe. HIGHLY RECOMMEND for families with kids - - located next to the pools, scoops and slices, close to sunset beach, and dolphins swimming outside our window. Spend a little extra for waterview! It is not a beach house or villa, but the benefits outweigh the separate house! Food was good. Harborside Grill for Breakfast. Harborside and The Pointe restuarants service could have been faster (trying to get the check), but at the same time, they were never rushing us out (need to remind myself we were on vacation). Ship Shore was nice NY style deli. Not many eating choices so explore some local places off report in Captiva and Sanibel (we tried RC Otters (Captiva) and Sunset Grill (Sanibel) - both very good).

If you rent a car from the airport, know that the resort is not a drive-around place. Consider a shuttlebus to/from airport (resort car is pricy so either go with SS bus or private company). AND then consider renting a golf cart - only if you think you will be traveling between North and South sides. If you stay on the north side, you can walk everywhere.
Highly recommend South Seas Island Resort. We will be back!!!

Room Tip: Stay on North-side if traveling with kids. Close to ALL. Harborside waterview at the point - dolph...

Spent 3 nights at the South Seas Island resort. A great place to get some Florida sunshine, relax on the beach and enjoy the tranquil picturesque landscape.

Our apartment was fully furnished and had everything we needed. It was comfortable and clean. The balcony was screened-in so it was nice to sit out in the evening and not worry about bugs. We could walk to the beach in 5 mins each morning and there were plenty of loungers, umbrellas and towels for hotel guests.

There were lots of families staying in the resort but it didn't feel over crowded.Children were well-behaved and seemed to enjoy building sandcastles and collecting shells.

We hired a car from the airport and drove to the resort. Hertz have a rental place at the entrance to the resort so it was easy to do a one-way rental. However, they close at 4pm each day which doesn't give you much time when arriving on an afternoon flight. Check-in is at 4pm but we had to wait 45 mins before our room was ready and also ended up calling 2-3 times to check for updates. It seems like they didn't have enough staff to turn the rooms/apartments around quick enough.

The resort has a small grocery store but it sells gourmet products which are all quite nice but rather expensive and not really ideal when all you need are basic essentials. Having the hire car meant we could stop off en route to the resort at one of many large supermarkets near the airport.

I stayed at this resort with a friend from college and our 2 teenage daughters over spring break.
The resort appears to be well kept. Previous reviews cautioned about run down rooms so we made sure to ask for an upgraded accomodation. We stayed at the Beach Villas. The first condo we stayed in, a 1 bedroom unit, was generally well appointed. The television was an older model but the living room area was clean and appeared to be in generally good condition until we tried to get the pull out couch to work. We could not budge the thing so I called to have it looked at early in the day. It took until much later (and several more calls), around 4 or 5 for someone to come out and when he did he pronounced the pull out broken and unfixable. The hotel staff then moved us to an adjoining condo which was MUCH nicer. After a day spent waiting this was commendable.

The kitchens are nice but fairly spartan with respect to cooking materials. Just the basics. Linens were changed daily and dish soap, dishwasher soap all replaced as needed. The housekeeping staff distributes the day's laundry replacement by depositing a bundle of laundry outside the room each day where it sits until the houskeepers come. Not a big deal but kind of an unkempt look.

We rented bikes for the kids and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves biking around the property. We played tennis for 2 days and the pro shop staff was friendly and accomodating. The biggest negative I think was the fitness center. While at first take it seems well equipped it quickly becomes apparent that it is much too small for the size of the resort. There are only 4 or 5 treadmills and when we were there 1 of the 3/4 ellipticals were out of order. Ther are a couple more stationary bikes and recumbent bikes but that is it. I got there early so had no issue but by 9am people were arriving and walking out as there were no available machines.

The beach was very nicely kept and the resort has chairs and beach attendants who provide umbrellas and beach towels free of charge. We went to the pools a couple of times. The pools at the north end of the resort are typically very crowded and noisy. They would do well to have pool supervisors at hand to keep the kids a little more under control as it got noisy and games of football and catch were getting a little crazy. Back to the beach. We also went parasailing one day. Highly recommended, not scary and the view is spectactular.

We went out to dinner several times and have to say the restaurants outside of the resort are uniformly terrible. We did not eat at any of the resort restaurants. AVOID the Bubble Room at all costs. Go to the grocery store before you cross over the causeway or go to Jerry's in Sanibel, buy a bunch of food and settle in.

On the whole, the experience was very positive. It was expensive but we found it to be a relaxing place to spend a week.

Room Tip: Ask for updated accomodation. High floor at the beach villas affords a good view of the Gulf
