“Best location in all of South Beach!”
Reviewed 11 May 2012

Beautiful art deco exteriors of the 2 hotels (Mc Alpin & Ocean Plaza) that make up the HGVC, South Beach. Even though the hotels are adjacent and have different historic names think of them as one hotel side by side. Hotel exteriors are so attractive that they are constantly being photographed from across the street. Location is the draw here...the hotels are in the most convenient but quiet location to all SoBe offers: the wonderful beach across the street and park and all the restaurants and action a block or 2 away. While the accommodations are updated the views probably won't be oceanview (but you didn't go to South Beach to sit in your room, did you?). We had a Mc Alpin 1-bedroom which was attractively furnished and generally well equipped. Rooms aren't huge as this is an historic property and buildings weren't built to maximize views. As others have noted it could have used more towel hooks or bars. Beach towels are provided at main desk in the Ocean Plaza Don't miss either hotel's 4th floor Recreation Terraces with jacuzzis and loungers. The Ocean Plaza also has a fitness room for the 2 hotels. Each hotel has complimentary laundry facilities. Don't miss: 90 min. daily Art Deco Walking Tour by the Miami Design Preservation League at 1001 Ocean Dr, outdoor dining on Ocean Dr., Espanola Way (recommend Havana1957 and Mexican across st.), and outdoor dining on Lincoln Road-many choices. Be aware that many restaurants add 18% gratuity automatically! If you study the outdoor menus a few minutes many of the hostesses will offer you discount cards of 10-15 or 20%. Also love the bike rental racks-about 100 within South Beach. We didn't use the hotel's valet parking but used the garage at 13th and Collins ($20 for 24 hrs.). Parking is frequently available at meters on Ocean Dr. at $1.75/hr. and there is a limit on number of hours. Reason for a 4 star rather than 5 was a security concern: although the McAlpin front door was supposed to be locked with key card entry only I found it not closed completely on 2 occasions and was able to walk in without using my card; staff indicated they would have it checked.

Thank you so much for your feedback in regards to your stay at our property. I wanted to let you know that our guest security is our number one priority, and we appreciate that you brought the issue to our staff’s attention. We have addressed it right away and repaired the faulty magnet that caused the door to release without the key card. Thank you again, and hope to see you again in the future.

Our group of girls of 8 was out to Miami for a Bachelorette trip. I had arranged for 2 suites for 4 nights. Check in was at 4:00 pm, but we had taken a red eye flight and got in quite early around 7 am. We got to the hotel around 8 am and Vanessa our front desk/concierge said our rooms were available and it was next to each other. We were so happy! It was a great start to our trip. From there on out, we continued to have great service from the friendly staff. Our suites were spacious enough. The pictures on their website do not do them justice. The furniture's actually are not outdated as in the pictures. The bathroom products were from Thomas Roth's..so they were really nice. There was no view of course, but we were right across from the beach! The location of the hotel was perfect! It was quiet on Ocean Drive. If we wanted the action, we could just walk further down on Ocean Drive. All of us were able to sleep..so helpful after all 3 nights of partying! They have a jacuzzi/lounge area on the rooftop of McAlpin and a fitness center at Ocean Plaza. The taxi driver's were always confused of these names..so you should just tell them the street number. They do not go by the Hilton since there is another Hilton on Ocean Drive called the Hilton Bentley. If you wanted recommendations to anywhere, Vanessa is definitely your go to person. We wanted authentic Cuban food and she recommended Puerto Sagua Restaurant. The food was delicious! We did not use the elevator much at all. The elevator is small and very slow. We were on the 2nd floor so we used the stairs, so much faster! Overall all, this hotel has everything that you would need for a great girl's trip!

Room Tip: 2nd floor is better because you can skip the slow elevators.

I made my reservation through an HGVC reservation agent who was very helpful. I asked for an ocean-view room. I said if you can't promise me one its ok, just tell me and I'll stay somewhere else. She called the property, talked to the manager and told me it was all-set. Guaranteed. Nothing can go wrong. I said thanks. I arrived and they had the request in the computer just as I said. Of course you know how this goes. I have a great view of the dumpster. I wish they had just told me the truth from the beginning. Now they are pointing fingers at each other - HGVC reservations vs the property. And I have a view of the dumpster! And while they acknowledge the broken promise they have not done anything aout it.

Room Tip: if you want to see the ocean don't stay here

Quaint hotel in excellent location. Convenient parking ramp 2 blocks away. Cost to park was $20/day, which added up quickly. Valet parking was $35/day, which we didn't use. Room was very nice, but crowded with furniture. If you opened the curtain, you could see into many rooms in the hotel next door, so we had to keep the curtains closed most of the time. Location was great with wonderful restaurants and the ocean within a block. At first I was disappointed in the room, but the location made up for it quickly. Staff was excellent and very pleasant and helpful. we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

My husband and I just returned from a 3 night stay at this hotel after exchanging our timeshare, and we had an entirely enjoyable stay. The rainy weather not withstanding, our time at this small Hilton property was well spent.

The hotel is located on Ocean Drive between 14th and 15th street, directly across from the public beach and park. Location was spectacular - we could walk to the beach, shopping, dining, and nightlife, but it was far enough away from the truly "happening" section of Ocean that we could retire to our rooms and sleep peacefully if we chose to do so, without being bothered by street noise. Since this is one of the original Art Deco boutique hotels, there aren't many amenities to speak of, but they do disclose that quite frankly on the website. The lobby is cute, with a front desk, coffee bar, and computer nook. There is a roof-deck and hot-tub on top of each building (the hotel is 2 small buildings next to each other), and there is also a very small gym, and laundry facilities. No restaurant or pool, but being across the street from the beach and offering a limited room service menu, this really wasn't an issue.

We stayed in a 1-bedroom suite, which was a really nice size for 2 people (it can sleep 4, but it would've been a bit crowded). There's a full kitchen, a breakfast bar, a living area, a separate bedroom, and a large bathroom in about 600sf. The rooms are done up nicely with Art Deco inspired decor, and everything was clean. Note that there are only 3 rooms in the Ocean Plaza building (not sure how many in the other building) that face the street. So, even though it's across from the ocean, most rooms have no view. One complaint - the bed frame was ridiculously wobbly, and every time you so much as rolled over, the whole bed shook. The bedding was comfortable, but it would've been better had it not moved so much.

Check in and check out were both timely, pleasant, and hassle free. When we checked in, they put us in the wrong room, but realized and rectified the problem before we got in the elevator. Everyone was very nice and treated us well. My only complaint would be that there was no housekeeping included in the stay. I understand not cleaning every day, but maybe every other day? And, if you wanted housekeeping, it was $30, which I thought was outrageous.

The front porch and roof deck were both small but comfortable places to people watch or sunbathe. The hot tub was clean and very hot, and the gym was well air-conditioned and neat. This hotel was everything we needed with nothing more, and was a great choice for a long weekend in Miami Beach.
