Really disgusting rooms that smelled of mildew, and old carpet and bathrooms rife with mold. Top that off with the rudest front desk staff, whom I frequently overheard scolding guests and then talking about them in Spanish behind their backs. Surprise - this Asian knows Spanish! One of the employees even rolled her eyes at me when I requested a room change because the a/c didn't work and the toilet's lever was broken so it wouldn't flush. She even tried to talk me out of it, saying that my room was one of the best ones they had and was an upgrade from what I reserved. Really? Your best room has a non-functional toilet? I truly don't understand people who are rude and choose to work in customer service and hospitality.

By the way, if you are considering this hotel because it has free airport shuttle pickup, it only picks up from the airport once every 3-4 hours, so it's useless. Not only that, the pickup location is all the way in international departures (yes, departures), instead of arrivals, so you have to make a long trek over there with your belongings from your domestic gate.

I chose this hotel because of it's close proximity to a lot of things that I wanted to do. I was visiting during a holiday weekend, and this hotel was one of the few left with vacancy a month out. I now understand why. In hindsight, 2-3 blocks north of here for $30 more per night would have been better.

I should also mention the noise level and quality of sleep. Between the slamming doors at all hours, the street noise, the upstairs neighbors who decided to rearrange their furniture in the middle of the night, and the awful, creaky bed, it was really hard to get a good night's sleep here.

I'd give this place negative stars, if I could. I guess the only thing I liked about the hotel were the croissants from a local bakery that were served during breakfast. They were good with coffee, especially after a night of drinking.

Over all, a terrible place to stay. Don't stay here. Just don't do it.

Room tip: Don't stay here.

Let me first say, there is NO parking at this hotel or anywhere close by. They do offer $25/night for the valet service which I STRONGLY recommend. There are two parking ramps each 1-2 blocks from the hotel and we ended up paying $42/night.
Our check-in was easy and the gentleman helping was very pleasant and efficient. Our room was facing Collins Street so it could be loud. I sleep with ear plugs so it didn’t bother me. The room was very clean and updated with a nice kitchenette area. The bed is more like a futon – mattress on a platform, no box spring. I found it comfortable but if you like a comfy mattress you sink into, this isn’t the spot for you. I did find the pillows to be too flat. I do enjoy a nice fluffy pillow, so that was a bit of a disappointment. We probably took the most issue with the bathroom. Don’t get me wrong – it was clean and functional. It could use a little updating and someone who knows how to properly use a caulking gun. I didn’t like that it had no hook and it could stand for a little more “counter” space given the pedestal sink and top of the toilet bowl were it for storage. The drain in the sink also didn’t work especially well. The complimentary continental breakfast is pretty much what I expected – a variety of breads, cereals and fruit and yogurt. They did offer waffles as well, which smelled good. I do think it could be extended a bit longer as it was only available between 8:00-9:30. I was definitely not unhappy with my stay but can certainly see why others may not be impressed. The price was right for our one night stay. If you want a quiet, 5-star spot to stay – this isn’t for you. If you want to be close to the action South Beach has to offer and don’t care about fancy amenities – this will fit the bill. I do wish they had an on-site workout facility – that’s at least a half-star in my hotel ratings.

Ocean Reef Hotel is a nice hotel for the budget conscious traveler.
Clean, very clean, nice kitchenette, and above all great service.
We were a little worried about the breakfast service, but it ended up being better than we expected.
As stated by many reviewers, location is great. Within ten block one can have everything from shopping, art, great restaurants, and the beach of course.
Thanks specially to Fabiola and Pedro in the front desk for their outstanding service.

Added a few days in Miami to the end of our cruise holiday. I can't believe this qualifies as a hotel. In Canada when you rent a hotel you get a real bed. This hotel does not have real beds. Metal slat platforms with I don't know what for a matress ( it crinkles like newspaper) and rock hard old futons. I did complain and they brought a single foam to put on the futon, which made it marginally sleepable. It is Musty smelling, hump your own suitcases up the stairs, old dirty louvre windows. Only the kitchenette was nice. Lobby is deceiving of the rest. Street noise. It is only a block to the beach. Only reason we stayed our three nights.Sad. There are hundreds of nice hotels just blocks away. This one needs to go to Costco and purchase some beds.

Room was very spacious and comfortable, breakfast good and staff kind and helpful. I would definitely stay in this hotel again, even if we woke up on two out of three nights on false fire alarms. It's also close to the beach and easy to reach from the airport by public bus.
