“Nice guesthouse in the middle of Key West”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2012

The stay in the Wicker Guesthouse was very nice. The house is located in the centre of Key West, in Duval Street and offers walking distance to everything: beach, restaurants, bars.... The rooms are nice, cosy and extremely clean. There is also a private pool with sitting area around it and a small kitchenette for tea or coffee. They also serve breakfast in the morning - tasty and good, but I was a little disappointed since the waffles and bagels were frozen and also the toasters did't work properly, I expected fresh food. The house also has limited free parking nearby. And Kady at the front desk was extremely nice and friendly.

Everything about my stay here was perfect from the friendly & knowledgeable staff to the quaint, quiet, tropical atmosphere. The Wicker Guest House is located right on Duval Street and walking distance to everything you could want or need. Being just blocks from the popular Key West bars you could walk to everything but still be out of the commotion. It is surrounded by some of the best restaurants on the island and close to the trolley stop, museums, CVS (if you need any last minute items like I did) and many amazing shops and galleries. The grounds were amazing with all of the lush tropical foliage and the pool was the perfect temperature with Frangipani blooming overhead. There was an outside shower and sitting area outside and inside with a big cozy couch. The room was big, clean and comfortable with a private deck outside with sitting area. The beds were comfortable (which is a big deal!) and there was great water pressure (also a big deal to me). One thing also that made my day (this is going to sound silly) but when I went down for coffee in the morning they had splenda and hazelnut creamer (along with others). When you like your coffee a certain way and no hotel ever has it, this was a wonderful surprise to make it feel more like home :) Kady Kay & Randy at the front desk were absolutely amazing, super friendly and made me want to come back to this little gem for sure!

Room Tip: I stayed in room number 17 upstairs overlooking the pool

Headed to Key West in early January, we didn't anticipate there would be so little available accommodation - apparently pressure from a prize fight Friday and a Ragnar relay race Saturday had the town nearly sold out. A side of the road service in Key Largo put me in touch with this B & B.

Duval Street is the heart of the Key West experience. If you want to be on/near Duval, the location is superb. You are just far enough away from the action for some peace but close enough to walk to any of the bars or restaurants or sights. If you are not wanting the night life, save some money and head to a more suburban location. They have some limited parking available but parking everywhere is at a premium.

This is NOT the Ritz. It is an eclectic collection of old buildings, in various conditions, centered around a small swimming pool. It is a bit of a maze to navigate. Reading reviews, I think there may be some variance in condition but I can comment on the room we had.

Our room was off Duval (thankfully) but did have windows onto the residential sidestreet. It had two excellent queen beds, a small kitchenette and a separate bathroom with LARGE tub and TINY shower. The room was clean and functional with lots of windows and light and pleasant decor. Some of the furniture was a bit dated but adequate for the purpose. WiFi is available in some locations on the property (poolside and some rooms) but not in the room we had. The door hinges could use a good shot of oil and there were lots of little bits of deferred maintenance - but again, it is an older set of buildings - some would call it 'character'.

The pool was small - ok for a cooling off dip but not really good for swimming. There were numerous chairs poolside to relax in.

The continental breakfast was superb - a wide selection of breads and pastries, jams, cereals, fruit, several juices, milk, tea and coffee - all fresh quality items. It was served in the rear garden with numerous areas around the pool to sit.

The clientele is as eclectic as the property - from young couples to old, some singles - and several different nationalities including a number of Europeans.

We thought the price was a bit on the high side - $189/night - but all accommodation we looked at in Key West seemed that way after coming from the Orlando area.

This one is a judgment call - you may love it, or hate it - all depending on your personal tastes and expectations.

The Wicker Guesthouse is located right in the middle of the action. Shopping, dining and entertainment are all within walking distance. The location couldn't be better.

If you are looking for true luxury, this isn't the place for you but if quaintness and character are your forte, look no further. There are a few minor things that could use some attention to detail such as a little touchup paint but overall it was an excellent stay and we would stay here again.

The staff was very helpful and friendly. Parking in Key West can be a challenge but they have 15 parking spaces that are free so there usually isn't a problem.

The continental breakfast was one of the better ones. It included fresh fruit and cereal along with the usual pastries and toast. If you need a bigger breakfast, full restaurants are nearby.

Room Tip: Our room was close to the back near the pool which is probably the quieter area.
