We booked a two-night stay at this hotel, driving down from Miami, taking in an airboat tour on the way, which was great.
Arriving close to midnite, we were checked-in quickly, and offered a room at the front of the hotel - an upgrade. The room itself was a disappointment, as it was tired and dated.
After putting the kids straight to bed, my wife and I went to have a shower only to find cockroaches in the bathroom.
Speaking to the night guy at the front desk, we were told that all of the rooms had them, and so moving to another room was an option, but that we would probably have the same problem, as they were common at night.
We decided to check-out, and asked for assistance in booking another hotel for the night, but were told it was probably too late and so he advised us to come back and talk to the manager in the morning.
After a sweaty, mosquito ridden night sleeping in our car (It was too late to find another hotel, and we had to leave the windows open, to cope with the heat), My wife, kids, and I went back to speak to the manager to complain and to get our money back. We were told that the money would be returned to my card in a few days (it actually took over a week), given a very sharp apology, and that was it - no offer of a the opportunity to shower, or freshen up, no offer of something to drink, which given the state of my children and wife after a night in the car, was ridiculous.
From what we saw of the room, we would agree that the hotel is dated, a little shabby, and clearly overpriced due to the location, that said, most of the hotels in the area seem to be, so it pays to do some research before you book.
We ended up staying at another hotel, paying a fair bit more, but ultimately it was worth it, as the pool area and rooms were amazing, and we felt comfortable, which after all was the main thing.
When we got back to London, I wrote to both the hotel manager, and the owners of the property, but did not receive any form of response from any of them, which really sums up my whole experience of this hotel.
If you want to enjoy the Keys, avoid the Inn at Key West, pay a little more, and get peace of mind, that is my advice.
