We enjoyed staying here 6 years ago, so returned when heading to Keys. Facilities haven't changed much; flat screens might have been upgraded. Everything well maintained, daily, inside and out. We had Pineapple Suite, which is one bedroom with full kitchen, Sound view. Can connect for 2 bedroom. Beautiful view of sound side. Heated pool and in-ground hot tub open all the time. Nice restaurant across the street.

Biggest drawback is lack of internet connection. WiFi available outside, but only near office. Their idea is you should relax. Our idea is that being connected is an integral part of your private lives, not just our business lives. Fortunately, iPad 2 with 3G played Netflix streaming to TV (bring your own cables).

We stayed Feb 22 - 26. Staff was wonderful and arranged in-room massages for us (thanks Denise). Made reservations for Christmas week as we were leaving. FYI: Try to fly into Ft Lauderdale instead of Miami airport.

Room Tip: Two suites; website diagrams room locatons to scale. Closer to water, more expensive. Pineapple is l...

Dear Koalatraveler:
Thanks for your return visit. So glad you remembered us and choose to come back. We're glad you found we still take pride in our resort and that our staff continues to be very helpful. Sorry about the internet limitations - we just don't want folks clicking away on their laptops at the pool or out on the dock while folks are trying to escape and relax. We're searching for a solution that will satisfy one and all.

We stayed on 22nd and 23rd of February. Our room was horrible like a motel. The bed was tiny and very uncomfortable. No facilities ar all and No maid service

The setting is beautiful but very close to an adjacent motel do it was noisy. We drove to islamorado and used the facilities of a nicer hotel.

If you are thinking if this just book a motel for the room and save hundreds of dollars

No internet except in one courtyard

We really appreciated the quiet privacy and serenity of the Kona kai. The grounds are not large, but quite lovely with all tropical plants, trees and flowers. Nice beach, raked over daily, and small harbour with paddle boat and canoes for residents to take out (free). Our suite was extremely well stocked (Kitchen) and comfortable with nothing overlooked. This is a small resort, which suited us fine, not easy to find in the night though, so go slowly down overseas highway once you've passed mile marker 98. DO ask for a free tour of the gardens by Rick, an ethno-biotanist who will open your eyes to the wonders and abilities of the plants. Also try a trip, from the Holiday Inn up the road, in the Glass bottomed boat to a nearby coral reef We will return next time we go to Key Largo

In fairness, Kona Kai does look above average for the area, but what it advertises as quaint and private could also be seen as slightly shabby and small. And at these prices I shouldn't feel guilty about wanting fresh towels or having my room cleaned. Our bathroom was tiny and in need of an update, but clean.

The location is a great starting point for exploring the upper keys and the everglades.

The staff are wonderful and Denise will do anything to help you make your stay pleasurable. She knows the best places to eat, view the sun sets, and tour. Having staff like this to deal with was a highlight.

We stayed at Kona Kai with our 3 adult children (mid twenty-somethings) for six nights in the middle of January. It was absolutely amazing! Our accommodations (a 1-bedroom suite, connected to a single room) were spacious and lovely. This was our first trip to the Keys, and when we turned off US 1 into the Kona Kai property, we gasped! The grounds are lush and gorgeous. Everywhere you look, there is beauty! Spectacular, exotic plants and flowers, towering palms, fountains, hardscape, art...Kona Kai has it all, inside and out!

When we walked into the office/art gallery area, Tracey was there to greet us. We'd spoken on the phone once, many months ago, yet she called us by name, and mentioned obscure details that she remembered about our family. What a warm way to welcome us, after a long journey to travel there! She and Lisa gave us a detailed tour of the resort, our suite(s) and recommended many activities and restaurants, based on our interests. We felt completely valued and welcomed, but also appreciated having our privacy respected. No detail was overlooked, from having our rented bicycles delivered to our door, to recommending the best sushi bar in Key Largo, to finding the most economical snorkeling excursion for our family. The "enviro-tour" boat picked us up right at the dock for an amazing private tour of the bay!

The ONLY suggestion I would like to make is better cell phone/internet reception. While I realize that the people at Kona Kai encourage their guests to "get away from it all," the reality is that we depend on the internet for practically everything these days, and it was frustrating at times. On the main road, service was strong. In the units, it was practically non-existent. And at the "hot spot," I never was able to get a connection on my laptop (although others seemed to connect. Maybe it's a "Mac" thing?)

We had a BLAST on our vacation! We enjoyed a cozy, elegant, restful getaway at Kona Kai, had fun exploring the Key Largo area, and had a great day trip to Key West. I cannot recommend it highly enough! We will be back!

One more thing...don't speed on US 1 ! I did get pulled over for speeding at 1:30 am on the way back from Key West. But when I told the officer we were staying at Kona Kai, he let me off with a verbal warning. Talk about service!!!

Dear Aul4: Thanks for the glowing review. Glad to know here at Kona Kai Resort, Gallery and Botanic Gardens we are living up to our promises! Doesn't sound like you took our ethnobotanists botanical garden tour which is quite enlightening - maybe next time.
As for the cell-phone internet service: we are aware that most cell phone service is weak and have asked the phone companies to improve their service - to no avail. We are prohibited by law to "re-broadcast" a cell tower signal to improve cell-phone service.
We purposely restrict internet availability, so folks are not sitting on the beach or waterfront dock with their laptops and smartphones "clicking away," while others are trying to enjoy the outdoors and nature. Not sure why you could not connect at our "hotspot," as we use both PC's and Mac's here to do that with no problem every day. When you're next here please bring it to Joe's (the owner) attention and we will try to figure it out together.
