My wife and I stayed 2 nights at Il Lugano on our way to the Bahamas and I would stay the experience was pretty good but not great.
First off the rooms are awesome, they are massive and rival the size of any 1 bedroom apartment. We stayed in a King suite with an ocean view. I believe each rooms comes with a balcony that either overlooks the ocean or the intercoastal waterway. We were on the 6th floor which is actual the 1st floor of rooms and we were also in a corner room which caused us to have an gigantic balcony. I'm not exaggerating when I say you could park a pick-up truck comfortably on the balcony, it was that large.
Our room came with a kitchenette and a combo washer/dryer which did come in handy. There is ample closet space in the room as well one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in.
The hotel has a small pool, a spa, a restaurant, a lobby bar, and rooms for events and meetings as well. We didn't try the restaurant but did have an appetizer (Fried Gnocchi) at the lobby bar at it was very good.
I had 1 minor issue with Il Lugano. The service was ok but nothing expectational that guests that frequent Preferred Boutique hotels expect. It's not that the Front Desk agents were rude because they weren't but they seem to lack personality. There was an older lady at the FD that was helpful when we asked about some of the local attractions.
Two of the FD agents, decent really didn't provide any answers to our simple questions. On the concierge desk was a take out menu from a pizza joint and when I asked the FD agent if she thought this place was worth while she didn't stop to talk to me instead talked to me over her shoulder while walking away to light the lobby candles. Again, not horrible service just not Preferred Boutique.
Just an FYI this hotel is great but is really in an awkward location. If you don't have your own car or don't want to pay a taxi everytime you want to go somewhere, you'll be walking a ways to get to get to places. To find a good beach scene we walked up to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea which is a little town just north of the hotel but it was a good 2 or 2.5 miles. There are a couple of restaurants around the hotel but they looked sleepy and were pretty empty. (A couple we spoke to out walking around mentioned that some of the restaurants and shops near the hotel had been hit hard by the economy)
I'd stay at Il Lugano again because of the rooms however if you're looking to be near bars and restaurants that you can walk to I'd recommended hotels that are a little farther south down A1A such as The Atlantic or Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort.
