This is the second year in a row my father, his 90 year old friend, and myself have spent a nite at the River Wilderness in Everglades City before going out fishing early the next morning . And when we come back next year we will probably stay here again as it is very well suited for our needs, which are minimal.
We stayed in a unit with two beds in the bedroom, a pull out couch in the living room, a full kitchen, full bathroom, and a screened in patio overlooking the river in the back. Both stays here we got in after dark and left super early in the morning so we were unable to take advantage of the canoes out back or anything else that is offered. But for our purposes it had everything we needed; three separate beds, a bathroom, and a coffee maker! The a/c worked fine and the room and bathroom were reasonably clean. Making a reservation on the phone was easy and the staff both times have been very polite on the phone. Maybe what I like best is that as we get in late, they leave a note for us at the door to which room is ours and in the unlocked room is our key. Truly small town and the way things once were!
This is not the place to stay if you want luxury or the normal amenities of a service hotel. Although my father and friend said that their beds were very comfortable, my one complaint is that the sleeper couch was not. But I'm one of those that can sleep pretty much anywhere, so it wasn't a huge issue.
I have "shopped" on-line at the other motels/hotels in town and their rates are very fair.
Certainly good enough to stay here again next year!

My husband and I stayed here for three nights prior to our cruise which departed from the port of Miami. It was unseasonably chilly, but the weather here (temps<70F) was still way better than <20F temps & snow at our home in London, KY the first week of February.

The town of Everglades City is a quiet little town away from the hustle and bustle of the city, a very scenic drive from the Miami Airport. We loved our peaceful and scenic little villa right on Lake Placid, with its well-equipped kitchen and a convenience store right across the street. Very little traffic noise, which is what we prefer. The screened porch overlooking the lake was the perfect spot to relax and spot all sorts of birds! The villa was well appointed with anything we could possibly need, a nice dining area, comfy living room with TV (which we didn't turn on the whole time!), free WIFI which was actually quicker than what we have at home and a separate bedroom with a comfy queen bed, dressers and closet. Lots of windows too. The kitchen area off the dining room was really perfect if you want to do any cooking and an outside grill, but we ate out at different area restaurants which I'll tell you about below. I can say that the full-sized refrig. kept our beer & juice nice and cold! And as for the dissatisfied previous posters, maybe they were expecting the Fountainbleu-for us it was better than that! If you expect your every little whim to be catered to, and if you can't carry your own bags up the steps keep looking, this is not the place for you! We found our "better than a suite" spacious 1-bdr villa to be very clean, well-furnished and the bathroom, shower/tub was clean & functional. And the porch, heaven! I have zero complaints about our great vacation find, thank you Mr. & Mrs. Baier for your fantastic retreat. I almost don't want to give such a good review to ensure a vacancy for our next visit, maybe that is what those previous dissatisfied posters were trying to do!

There are canoes here for villa guests' use and Airboat rides right next door but we were so busy exploring the ENP, we didn't have time for that this visit. I can see how this is a fisherman's paradise, but I'd rather get my seafood already prepared for me at the restaurant, and the local offerings are sure to please!

It was the perfect location to explore the Everglades and explore it we did! Wildlife is everywhere you look. We took the long scenic ride through the pinelands wilderness and visited Flamingo, ENP and took their excellent Ranger-led boat tour of the Mangroves departing from the Marina, which afforded an excellent opportunity to see the natural beauty of the mangrove ecosystem and SO MANY birds & alligators! It was really informative and fun. The Ranger who pointed out and identified all sorts of plants, trees & birds that we saw along the tour suggested we visit Anhinga Trail on our way back to our Villa and WOW! The crowded but beautiful Anhinga Trail is THE BEST spot to see birds & creatures of all kinds, Purple Gallanules, Anhinga families raising their young, every kind of stork, heron, ibis, vulture, woodpecker, pelican, alligator, croc, lizard etc. will be seen here. I think the Anhinga trail was one of the highlights of our ENP visit, there were so many! We also did the trail at the Big Cypress NP and saw a lot of birds and deer. Both are very nice, level, easy to walk trails. Practically everywhere you look you can see those beautiful Anhingas! We never did see that elusive Florida Panther but were careful to drive the lowered speed limit at night & were glad we did when we spotted the officer just waiting for speeders! On our way out of town we walked the beautiful Shark Valley loop trail, saw wildlife of all kinds but didn't have time for the tour, hopefully next time.

The Captains Table Restaurant with great waterfront bar is walking distance and we ate there two evenings, above average fresh fare & portions, excellent service and prices were reasonable. Anything seafood on their menu will be delicious and the wait staff are above par! Be sure to get their salad bar with the best peel-and-eat shrimp you will find anywhere! One night they had live music, a folk/rock, acoustic troubador who was very good, sorry we didn't get his name, we enjoyed the music on our porch while watching the sunset sky (did I mention we LOVED that porch?) he finished his show before we got over there. The third night we drove over to that wonderful Oyster House restaurant and even though we got there around closing time, the food & service was spectacular-we had the special-broiled twin Lobster tails, they were excellent at a very reasonable price!

Yes you will spend some $$$, you are on vacation!!! The local prices are actually inexpensive for what you get and we can't wait to visit here again. No, its not the Fountainbleu! Check-in and checkout was effortless, pick up & drop off your key & you're done! We never did meet the Baiers in person, but when we had a question, they were just a phone call away! Thank you again to the Baiers for your great hospitality and villa! We like to visit places off the beaten path and seek nature, scenic beauty, peace & solitude on our vacations-you will find that here at the River Wilderness Waterfront Villas!

Room Tip: We stayed in Villa #13, it was well-equipped, very quiet and had a great view.

I have stayed at the River wilderness many times in the last 6 years (unit 1) to be exact and as the rooms are dated remember these are Mainly used by people coming to Fish for two day to a week at a time. So as a Fisherman these rooms are perfect at the end of a long day of Fishing. We have never had a problem with checking in getting the room cleaned extra towels or things of that nature. We always bring our own cooking gear as I wouldn't use the stuff provided any where I stayed. If your looking for luxury you should stay in Marco or Naples if your looking for a comfortable place to stay while fishing then this place is perfect for the Fishing trip.

Very quaint but nice layout, and spacious rooms right on the Everglades water front. Great, caring staff!! There is also nearby fishing, airboat rides, and lots to see around the area. It is about a half hour drive to shopping and beaches.
