This center was destroyed by the hurricane and has not been rebuilt yet. There is a trailer with very little in it and the worst porta potties I have ever seen. We went for the tour of the everglades, which I would certainly recommend, but don't go there thinking it's a visitor center or that it has hiking trails. It's only purpose is the boat tour.

This center is under construction. It has two rangers to answer a trailer (temporary office) full of people.
Why are the Everglades visitors centers so much smaller and offer little compared to other national parks?

On weekends the NPS offers a free canoe trip across the bay to Sand Fly Island. We took the trip with Andres and Richard on March 11. First you paddle about a mile across the bay into a channel through the islands. Along the way we saw dolphins and ospreys. When we got to the island, Andres led a walk around the island, pointing out various natural and man made sights on the island. After a break for lunch, we headed through some different channels through the islands before paddling back across the bay to the Visitor Center. The total trip was 4.5 hours and it was obvious the Andres and Richard really enjoyed giving this tour. The trip was moderately strenuous and I would recommend this trip for teens and older.

We enjoyed the boat tour provided by the Park Service. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and informative. The highlight was the dolphins that he spent a lot of time driving near so we could get good photos of. Everglades city is a cute little town. We enjoyed eating at Camillas Street Grill for some excellent fresh seafood.

Building is closed due to a 9 ft surge after recent hurricane destroyed the building, so they are under renovation. They are in a trailer with just a map. Lots of rangers though and a list of recently sighted animals.
