“The beach is your back yard!”
Reviewed 11 July 2012 for a stay in July 2012

The Beach House: We had a nice stay in the "Beach House South." It's hard to beat staying on a double lot right on the ocean! Having nothing but beach for your backyard for a week is a wonderful thing. The layout is a little quirky in that two bedrooms are downstairs and the master is upstairs, but this place grows on you quickly. We never felt crowded here. There was plenty of room for us with the big living room area and large eat-in kitchen. The master bedroom was very spacious with a king-size bed, dressers, two closets, a sitting chair, and a bathroom. The master bath also serves as a the guest bath for the upstairs/main level (there's a separate door off of the hallway). The two downstairs bedrooms had adequate space as well and shared a bathroom downstairs. The beds were all comfortable. The kitchen was very big and had very beautiful, but had very dark decor (dark granite counter tops, dark slate floors & back-splash, dark appliances, and dim lighting). The appliances all worked fine (dishwasher, refrigerator, ice/water dispensers, blender, can opener, toaster, coffee pot, laundry washer/dryer, etc.). The views from the kitchen, living room, and eating area were great as there are two sliding doors and two windows which all look out to the ocean. The laundry facilities are downstairs off of the two-car garage. The garage doors needed some repair although we were still able to park in one side while the other side was being used for storage of beach equipment. There was a large TV with a DVD player in the living room and two of the bedrooms had TVs also. There were DVDs and games such as Jenga and Monopoly available for use. The master bedroom has it's own door that leads right out onto a long deck/balcony that looks out to the beach and ocean and one other bedroom had a door that led out to the patio below. Although the other homes in the immediate area had residents and/or renters, we never heard anyone else and never felt crowded. A brand new gas grill and a tiki-bar are both located right on the property for your private use. Great views!

The Beach: The beach was your back yard! Several items were available for use (beach towels, beach chairs, beach umbrella, sand toys, boogie board, several inner tubes and inflatable rafts, and a rinse station to name a few). The water was clear and very shallow for quite a ways out and the waves were never too rough while we were there. Overall the beach was very clean and not at all crowded. I did not see any garbage on the beach and there was not too much ocean debris (i.e. sea weed or other plants) despite a recent storm prior to our arrival. There were a lot of neat shells to collect as well as sharks' teeth. Other people in the area found a sea horse and sand dollars. Turtle nests can be seen right in the area as well. There is a good-size patio with chairs, table, and tiki-bar for your use as well. I was a little apprehensive about renting a location without a swimming pool, but after experiencing this location on the Gulf, I quickly learned a pool is not necessary given how nice the beach and water is right there. We spent 8+ hours outside every day! What fun it was!

The Area: There are several restaurants within walking distance although we did not try any of them. Other beaches are withing walking distance or a brief drive (Englewood Beach 3 minute walk nouth, Blind Pass Beach 5 minute drive north, Stump Pass State Park & Beach 2 minute drive south, Venice Beach 20 minute drive north). There is a Walgreens, a CVS, a Wal-Mart, Dollar Store, as well as other restaurants, grocery stores, and shops within a 15-20 minute ride. Water craft rentals as well as fishing charters and boat tours are within 5 minutes away. The locals and other renters in the area were all very friendly and seemed very laid back. The town seemed crime free and we always felt safe while there.

The Owner & Staff: Gina, the owner communicated well and was flexible to meet our reservation requirements. The staff was super nice and very helpful when we had an issue with a broken beach umbrella they responded very quickly with a replacement. The owner personally came out to deliver some dishwasher detergent and to ask if we needed anything. While there, she decided the grills needed to be replaced and had a brand new gas grill sent out. She seemed genuinely concerned with pleasing her guests and seems to continually look for ways to improve.

The Weather: I heard horror stories about the summer heat and humidity and of course warnings about hurricane season. On the beach, the weather was great. The water temperature was perfect and the air temperature was not too hot. The humidity was a non-factor due to the Gulf breeze. When we went inland to shop or sight see it seemed more humid, but staying on the beach gave us the benefit of feeling less humidity. I did not see any rain while I was there except for the last day we had a light sprinkle and it passed quickly. Other times I could see lightning and/or storm clouds inland but it remained clear and sunny on the beach.

In General: I would recommend the Beach House South because it is located right on your own private beach, it was spacious, and situated in a great location. I found this property to be suitable for children (we have kids ages infant to 12 years and we all enjoyed it and felt safe), although you will have to use stairs and the stairs would be accessible to little kids. Also, because the owner and staff aim to please.

Liked best: The location. The fact that you have a large, private beach all to yourself!
Liked least: A few things on the property seemed a little rundown (but owner seems to be continually updating)
