Review of Los Dos Compadres

Los Dos Compadres
Ranked #63 of 199 Restaurants in DeLand
Price range: US$ 6 - US$ 11
Cuisines: Mexican
Description: We are a family owned and operated restaurant. Our family moved to DeLand, Florida 25 years ago from Estado de Mexico. We opened our first little restaurant 12 years ago in Deleon Springs, Florida, with a little help from my grandmother's recipes. Our grandmother is so proud that her recipes have not been changed. Even though she has never been in this country, in a way she is with us every day.

The green salsa was delicious, nice spice. The red salsa was rather non discript. I don't typically order combos, but did (#1) this evening. The cheese chili rellleno was pretty good, served with chicken enchiladas - nice tortillas. I opted for Verde instead of ranchera. It was great. Restaurant was busy. Servers were attentive

Good location. Service was very good. The top shelf margarita was ok. Too much orange liqueur. Everything else was pretty bad. The chips were stale. The mahi mahi tacos were awful. Not saying they were not mahi-mahi but they were strong fishy tasting. The soft shell beef taco was ok but the shell was paper thin and tore up during handling. The pork taco was dried out. Definitely do not recommend and we will not be back.

Ate lunch and had the chili rellenos, very tasty, good portion size. A little spicy as some pablanos can be just like jalapenos differ in heat range but very good. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. I will go back again and try some of the other dishes, the prices were comparable to other similar restaurants for same size portions. The only thing was their website says they open at 10:00 am and they do not, it is 11:00 am but they let us in and seated us at 10:45 am and did not hesitate to bring us chips and drinks right away. They said they were not aware the time was wrong, would address with owner asap.

We have eaten at this restaurant many times but hadn't been there for several months until today. We have noticed a continual progress in the updating of this facility. It started out as very basic and in much need of a face lift. Almost every time, we have noticed improvements, including today. No longer a "ho-hum" establishment, it is actually quite attractive inside. The big surprise was the beautiful new menus with a significant hike in the prices. No more lunch deals: lunch prices are now $7 to $15. It goes higher for the dinners. One of us had quesadillas and the other had enchiladas. They were delicious, but not as ordered. There is a choice of beef, chicken or cheese. Since there are 2 quesadillas or enchiladas on each plate, we each ordered chicken and beef. However, we got only beef. The wait staff is pleasant enough but not as careful as they should be about the orders. This place is one of the better ones in the area, but with higher prices than most other Mexican restaurants here, we will try one of the others next time.
