wasn't a great beach day, what to do? flamingo gardens is where you need to be. so unexpected, and beautiful. we were a family of 6, 4 adults and a 9 and 12 year old. i have difficulty walking but not a problem for $5 we rented a wheelchair there. there are peacocks everywhere strutting around, many with their feathers opened into a fan. an animal show with an outdoor theatre so that you can learn about the animals that they have. most of the animals cannot be released back into the wild due to injuries. some they get as babies and are releasable. the outdoor aviary is a wonderful place to roam about. it is covered with wire so the birds can't fly away and you can see them very close up. the kids loved feeding all the birds including the roaming peacocks. they also had alligators, flamingos of course , river otters turtles and a few others. it's a lovely way to spends a few hours outside. the free tram tour to the back of the property was another great learning experience. they also have a food truck and an outside restaurant with prices that won't break the bank. the trees and flowers are well marked. if you like flamingos and gift shops this is the place for you. you can also visit the wray home on the property to see what homes were like in the 1930's in south florida. if you aren't tired of walking drive a few miles and head to sawgrass mills. it's a huge outlet mall with very nice stores.
