“Best Sushi around Tampa/St Pete”

Tiny place wherein Ken (the owner/chef) can easily get fall behind time-wise, but never quality-wise. He lets the quality of the fresh ingredients shine, not overwhelming the fish with heavy sauces. This would definitely be a 5 if waiting time for tables and/or food were shorter.

We've been here a couple of times, it's pretty small but the food is really delicious. Ken's Amazing sandwich is my favorite, but the fried rice and soups are good too. Come prepared to wait, because you will wait about 30 minutes for your main course. Have some soup to tide you over. I've also called ahead for take out, still just as good.

We had been to Umai Café in Clearwater just a week before. The menus are much the same and with the comparison, Ken came up short. The gyoza didn’t have a lot of flavor. The chicken yakitori appetizer was a little tough. The beef nekimaki appetizer was also tough and didn’t have a lot of flavor.

For mains we had several sushi rolls. All were good. It was surprising how many items on the sushi menu contained cream cheese. I’ve seen cream cheese in Philadelphia rolls, but not many others. We also had an entrée of mixed vegetables with rice which was fine.

Overall, Ken Sushi was pretty good if staying with the sushi items (and avoiding the cream cheese options). Once we moved to anything cooked and hot, we were much less successful. Maybe if we hadn’t had such a good meal at Umai just a week before we would have thought more favorably. But we did so we didn’t.

I have been there a few times already and the food and service are always excellent. It is a small place with a nice ambiance. The sushi menu is creative, with an excellent presentation, and all in all very tasty. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because the wait can be quite long. Having said that, just go there when you are not in a rush and you will truly enjoy it!
