We stayed at the Beach Hotel from the 2nd to 4th of January. We stayed in 2 Executive rooms which are to be recommended. The rooms were spacious and had lovely outlook. The one on the ground floor suited my disabled mother (not in wheelchair but can't walk far). It looks out to the back of the swimming pool and across to the sea. This room is set up as a double with twin beds and has a small sitting area with a sleeper couch. We had the executive room on the first floor. It has a four poster bed and small sitting area with a sleeper couch. (We didn't use them so I can't comment on how good they are. Both rooms had spacious bathrooms with walk in showers and lovely big baths. The upstair room has a large balcony while the room below has a small balcony. The hotel has 3 restuarants. The verandah which has pub food, a buffet restaurant and Ginger an a la carte restaurant. The burgers were the only food I'd recommend on the verandah though the other restaurants were excellent. Service was very slow and waitresses disappeared and reappeared. Cocktails are to be recommended on the verandah. Breakfast was good but somewhat slow at replenishing. The general cleanliness of the rooms was good but the communal areas e.g. stairs and verandah area needed a proper vacuum and the latter needed a deep clean. I was astounded to find that the hotel wished to charge a R50 deposit for a second room key card. 3 levels of reception staff were not able to resolve the issue. The GM has been responsive to feedback. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay and woudl return.

Should you decide to have an early morning breakfast at the Beach Hotel in Port Elizabeth be sure not to expect service. This establishment is tired and it seems the staff too. No evidence of any management. The place is filthy and falling apart with unkept gardens. Such an amazing location totally and sadly wasted.

Two nights at the beginning of our holiday and probably the worst hotel of our visit. Not to say it was awful, it's just a bit tired and unremarkable. Some of the reception desk staff really need to understand their job better. If you say you'll find out some information like if the room is ready and you don't, then don't say you'll find out. Try and be knowledgeable about what local attractions there are, don't just look at me blankly and only be able to suggest one thing. Also, smiling and having a friendly demeanor helps too. Contrary to what some other people have said I found the waiting staff great, particularly in the bar/cafe area, though it was difficult to know who was staff at breakfast. I also understand the lack of enthusiasm for the food as I only went with some of the more appealing items and there was nothing remarkable about those. There is a good swimming beach nearby which is a plus, life guards included but it was a bit windy when we were there. I wouldn't go to this place again but unfortunately the travel agent chose it for me.

Room Tip: Ground floor room good for baby monitor as can reach the bar area. This did lead to us hearing a bit of noise but it wasn't bad.

After being recommended to start our South African holiday here at the Beach Hotel by a friend and former resident of PE we firstly found our way to it from the airport very easily and were then pleasantly surprised by both the ease of parking and a happy, friendly and informative welcome from car park security, reception staff and the porter.

Our room (we were actually given a suite which was a pleasant surprise) whilst a little dated and showing a few signs of its age was large, comfortable, light and airy. It was also very peaceful even though it looked into a courtyard style arrangement of other room entrance doors. The bed in particular was a good size and very comfortable and we both enjoyed a good nights sleep as a result. The bathroom was well equipped with a decent shower and a jacuzzi bath (not used as we are aware of the drought problems and water rationing which we fully respect)

We were eating out at friends in PE on the one night we stayed at the hotel so didn’t try the on site restaurants although the choice is good and they all seemed to be well supported and busy.

Things kind of unraveled the following morning when we went down for breakfast. There was clearly no real organisation of the staff to welcome guests and show them to their table, the dining room whilst well located and nicely decorated in old colonial style seemed to be getting overseen by a somewhat mixed bag of hotel personnel, dressed randomly so it was actually difficult to differentiate between staff and guests (could be awkward!) and it has to be said, who really didn’t appear to want to be there.

All the cooked food seemed slapped together, a bit like the hotel doesn’t want to offer a traditional English style breakfast but kind of has to. The eggs, bacon and sausage all looked off colour - in fact it all looked the same colour. Grey. The beans had run out when we arrived and were never topped up. Cold meats and cheeses were also offered but they also looked off colour and unappealing. They were in fact - grey! There was minimal portions of everything else and a toaster that either didn’t toast your bread (one loop) or cremated it (two loops). We had to ask for tea for two as the staff sat us down but then didn’t offer up any advice on food selection or hot beverages.

All of the time we sat in the breakfast room there were two babies squawking and crying (parents if that goes on for longer than 5 minutes - and it did for 20 mins at least, you need to take your child out!) and there were the strains of Christmas music ‘plink plonking’ through what sounded like a cardboard box. And the staff just looked sullen, miserable and grumpy. And they were.

We left and bid our goodbyes - not a smile, word or acknowledgement in our direction.

In summary - the hotel is fine, but the restaurant breakfast staff on the morning of 29.12.17 let the establishment and their colleagues down.

Sorry but if I was to return to PE I wouldn’t come back.

Warm Greetings from The Beach Hotel,

Thank you for your valued feedback and insight. We are very sorry to hear that the breakfast team let you down on your visit and will be sure to spend time with them with regards to atmosphere and service levels. This is by no means the environment we strive to create and what guests here at The Beach Hotel have come to expect.

Thank you again, we wish you safe travels and hope you have a wonderful holiday.

in my opinion this is still the best hotel in Pe based on staff service and location. The staff are fantastically friendly.Ramsey is a real gem in the crest restaurant remembers past guests and really goes the extra mile .Iris is also a great asset to the team.Buffet style meals are offered in the Crest main dining area nightly. One can also just sit in the lounge ,veranda area and enjoy the beachfront views.A smaller menu is also available to eat on the veranda. The hotel is clean and well managed.this is clearly evident from the attentiveness of the staff.well done.We will be back to book room five again.

Room Tip: sea views.room 5 is close to the reception
