The General Store is a Newtown landmark and a great place to stop for lunch, but the experience can be hit or miss depending on what you order and the time of day.
Be advised there is limited seating and the place is packed for lunch almost everyday. Have someone grab a table of you see one available and then have another person get in line to order. The worst thing you can do is order hot sandwiches and then stand around waiting for a table to clear out (I never counted but I think there are 5-6 tables for 4). But do be prepared to wait for you food because they don't have the best process. You will find yourself sandwiched (no pun intended) between 20 people you don't know while you wait.
Most of the specialty sandwiches are perfectly fine but there are some standouts and stay aways. Standouts include any of the chicken cutlet sandwiches (the flagpole, the bee, newtown's best chicken sandwich). If you like pastrami the Flatbush is awesome. Standard stuff like burgers are OK as well.
Stays ways include the "siciliana" which on paper sounds good but not well executed behind the counter. The pasta and potato salads are always looking a bit long in the tooth if you know what I mean. They all have that glazed "I've been here for a few days" look to them.
If you are passing by during the breakfast rush you can get a really good sausage, egg and cheese on a hard roll for $1.75 (before 11am). But then they jack the price up to $2.50 after 11am.
Get there at 12pm on any SAT to beat the rush - and note they are closed on SUN.
