Owner description: The Ledge Light Foundation is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that has been responsible for restoration and preservation of Ledge Light for 30 years. In 2014, dedicated volunteers from the Foundation wrote the application to the GSA/NPS for the New London Maritime Society to obtain ownership in an effort to keep Ledge Light in local hands. The Ledge Light Foundation continues its work under this new ownership. The Foundation continues the upkeep, restoration and preservation of Ledge Light maintaining an Interpretive Center within the lighthouse complete with historic and photographic exhibit panels in most rooms, a theater showing a compelling documentary about its history, a furnished keeper's room and a gift shop. Tours run to the lighthouse and visit INSIDE during the summer months in partnership with Project Oceanology using their boat. The tours are run solely by the Ledge Light Foundation and are the only tours that take visitors inside the light. As the Maritime Society owns the building, that's as a landlord only. They have nothing to do with the restoration work which is all-volunteer and done by the Ledge Light Foundation. The Maritime Society is only the landlord. Please direct any inquiries to our website. The Maritime Society knows nothing about the tours or the work done. Visit our website tour page for information about the Foundation and to purchase tickets for tours.

If you ever have the chance to get out to the New London Ledge Light you won't regret it. Located at the mouth of the Thames River in Groton/New London, the views and history are outstanding!

Was able to get a good view of this light by boat from the water with the Cross Sound Cruises. Apparently you can take tours to actually go inside the lighthouse; check current tour offers for more details and what is available for that time.

Living in the New London area I have always wanted to see and explore the ledge light lighthouse. I first saw on Facebook that tours were offered to actually go inside and experience the lighthouse so of course I looked into it right away. I purchased my tickets online and met the tour guides at the Avery Point UConn Campus where we then boarded the project oceanology boat and started our tour to the lighthouse. I personally enjoyed every bit of the tour. Not only learning about the surroundings but also the project oceanology team that was on board had random species of ocean life that they were releasing on our way out. So I was able to learn about some ocean life the lighthouse and also we took a beautiful tour of some of the Thames River. The tour guides were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable it was worth every minute of my time. I've been on tours driving by historical areas but to be able to go out and actually walk around inside take pictures there's nothing like it. I highly recommend it.

Laurie,

Thank you so much for your rave review of your tour to Ledge Light. As an all-volunteer team of tour guides, we are proud of our knowledge of the lighthouse and surrounding waterfront. Thank you for coming out to see inside Ledge Light. Please tell your friends... and come back yourself soon because new exhibits are fabricated and improvements to the building are being made every year. Every tour is different.

Had a great trip to the Groton/NewLondon area! We went on the Ledge Light House Tour. Been meaning to go on this tour for a couple of years and so glad we did. Had a beautiful day for it. Loved every minute of it. Boat ride out there was simple and quick. Lighthouse was Great! It has been restored-Great work done! It is all done by volunteers. Super informative movie that they made and show! Historical Place! Delightful, Informative Staff! Super views! Great for picture taking. And I made it to the very top of the Light House! When leaving they took us on a ride up the river(Thames River) a ways, for more sight seeing. Great Experience!

Thank you so much for the great review! We are all volunteers and love to hear that our work is appreciated.

Also, thank you for taking the tour to see inside Ledge Light. We're so happy that you found out you could go INSIDE LEDGE LIGHT!. So many people take the Cross Sound Ferry tour that just rides people up to the outside and they think that's our tour. It is not! We are the Ledge Light Foundation and every penny we take in either by donations, memberships, tours or gift shop sales goes back into the lighthouse for our ongoing work of restoration.

Thanks again for visiting!
