If you go to recreation .gov and have a 4 wheel drive, you can sign up for an all day guided auto tour. You will get to see 4 times in Colorado history. Dinosaur foot prints in limestone (on both sides of the river bring extra shoes), American Indian Rock paintings, remains of a Spanish settlement and a Colorado Cattle Ranch (closed in 1971). Look for Picketwire canyon auto tour. If you hike it, bring as much water as you can carry as it is a long hot hike.

I was very familiar with the grasslands, and it had been awhile since the three years I walked them for 8 miles per day. It is fascinating how the culture runs pretty much from the prehistoric paleo to the dust bowl. I don't think of the area as a wasteland, when i see it, everything is there, imagine the southern bison herd, homesteaders leaving there home and dry land farm when the dust was over the fences...want to see the real Colorado, start in La Junta

I've only ever seen the prairie chicken mating on videos. Seeing it in person was pretty awesome. Good place for bird/wildlife watching in general. Day trip at most.

We drove through the grassland from La Junta. Watching the landscape change from fairly dusty, dry and barren to this unique vegetation and bluffs was amazing. Surprising amount of wildlife. Would love to return and explore further!

This is a wasteland, Trash Everywhere!!! If I was filming a documentary on desolate real estate, I would start Here! I found nothing impressive about this place! Sorry!!!
