This park is amazing! So beautiful, and areas for beginners all the way to the most advanced ice climbers! I started climbing here 3 years ago, and am hooked! Truley a unique spot, I've seen nothing like this anywhere!

Easy to get to, uncrowded, and the climbers will readily explain the equipment, conditions, etc. I took lots of pictures and was blown away by the climbers and the icicles. There is so much to do in Ouray, even in winter.

Went with friends to go ice climbing and found the park to be breathtakingly serene!

There are places for beginners though if you are interested. I went with friends that had gears so I'm not sure if there are places to rent equipment.

If you do decide to go ice climbing, go early to avoid the crowd. We went at 6 am and we were able to get our routes first. Crowd started to arrive a couple of hours later.

There is a very large parking lot (which overlooks the town) then it is a short walk to the viewing area. This place is set up great with metal viewing areas that extend out over the canyon. You can sit and watch ice climbers climbing up the frozen ice falls.

This is a unique experience for Ice-Climbing. Get up, walk out of your hotel room and within 15 minutes you can be climbing on ice. Most, if not all of the routes can be top-roped, making even a difficult climb attemptable by a beginneer (like me). I did not hire a guide, by brother and his climbing partner are expert climbers, and we had a great time. I have done this trip twice, but it was the first time for my husband. There are guides available in town and most of them will give beginners lessons and rent equipment. It is advisable to purchase plastic boots however. You will be more comfortable in them. (If you are the type of person who enjoys ice-climbing you will find other uses for your plastic boots.)
