Hike above Glenwood Springs to see old tombstones and the graveyard (not the exact spot) where Doc Holliday was buried. There is a tombstone with Doc Holliday’s name with perhaps an ace of spades and some coins left on the monument.
The road to the gravesite is poorly marked. We climbed several small, brushy hills trying to find it and finally gave up, as it was hot and we were tired.
We were disappointed, but managed to visit the Doc Holliday Harley Davidson shop instead
We thought this would be fun, turns out it took a bit of time to hike to the top of the mountain where the cemetery was located. Take water, and don't wait too late as there are no lights on the trail in/out.
Got up one morning and decide to check this out. Parked on the street near the trailhead. An all uphill walk, but not too bad if you take your time. There were quite a few irresponsible pet owners who walked there dogs up as there was numerous droppings on the side of the trail. Once you get to the top, it is well marked to get to the grave. Same with Kid Curry who is also buried there. There are also display signs which explain the history.
One of our favorite shows is Tombstone, so we had to go see this famous grave site. It is well worth it!! So much history up on that mountain!! It is quite a hike for people that are out of shape or older. It is pretty much straight up so take water and maybe a snack. Most importantly take water!!! You will love it!!
Enjoyed finding out more about Doc Holliday and that he passed away at the Glenwood Hotel (which is no longer there/burned down), and its prior location was at 8th and Grand where there is now an outfitter store. It is a pretty moderate/steep climb, but not too long. One can stop along the way to catch your breath and take in the views of the town down below. Very hot, dry, dusty up at the top. Some more recent burials there as well.
