Magical place secreted away in the mountains

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 18 Jan 2011
My friend and I stayed at Dunton this past December, with my dog (who probably enjoyed it most of all). We immediately fell in love with this eclectic, unique and possibly even eccentric lodge. Each cabin is beautifully restored and charming. The chefs were incredible and catered to all of my eating preferences and allergies without hesitation. The staff is equally wonderful, cheerful and always available to help with any question. I highly recommend Dunton for a romantic getaway or a solo trip where you desire time to relax, reflect and soak up the beauty and majesty that transpires through this historical little hotel town.

Superb combination of spectacular setting and intimate hospitality. The resort is simply charming and staff were personal and genuine. We visited Dunton over Christmas 2010 and the could not have imagined a better way to relax and observe the snow fall from the warmth of the hot springs and raging fires. The cuisine is excellent.

In the past year, my family and I have visted Amangiri (superb!) and Amanyara (disappointing for its service and food) and Dunton compares equally with Amangiri. Despite the different style (Amangiri is modern), Dunton and Amangiri share the qualities of unusual setting and intimate, personalised service.

Dunton is amazing. I have found only two places on earth that I truly relax, and with a four year old in tow, that's hard. Dunton is one with the Kia Ora Sauvage in Rangiroa the other.

We are returning after a winter trip with just my wife and I in February 2010. We wanted our daughter to see this place. The Winter is significantly cheaper and even more lovely. From tracking snow martin with my four-year old to leisurely watching the feet of snow fall, it was perfect. Again!

Eduardo Rossi, the GM came to the property since our last visit. He is one of the kindest, friendliest, well informed GMs you will ever find. His easy going personality fits right in with Dunton's atmosphere. He always is there to make your stay perfect. Of it isn't, he will do anything necessary to make it so. For example, when a couple was leaving during a snow storm he braved the roads with them to make sure they got down the valley safely. Most GMs wouldn't bother to walk you to the door, let alone drive miles just to make sure you get home.

Eric is beyond reproach. He is in his fourth year at Dunton and it just wouldn't be the same without him. He is the hardest working man in show business. He is working long before you wake and leaves far after. He is helpful and thoughtful, anticipating your needs before you mention them. He treats you as his own special guest and as if you are in his home. He is a delight and an inspiration.

Dennis is truly one of the best chef's I have dined with. He is imaginative and unrelententing is his search for the special. Who gets to try buffalo and antelope in the same trip? He hunts down black truffles at $100.00 an ounce because the dish he wants to make needs them. When explaining to Eduardo why the resort has to sound $150 on truffles, he is passionate and you can tell that Eduardo needs no convincing. If it will make the guests happier...do it.

BoJo the activities coordinator kept my daughter in stitches. From arts and crafts to snow sledding, she is a tireless ball of energy and my daughter fell in love instantly. She couldn't get enough of BoJo. What a treat!!

The resort is now all inclusive...but for all the right reasons. It seeks to add value, not cut corners. They don't skimp. The alcohol is included with fantastic wines and hard to find liquors. Where do you find Hendricks Gin, Ten Cane Rum, and any whisky you can imagine on an all-inclusive bar menu? Ultra Premium wine and hand crafted beer, all at your disposal. And the reserve wine list, which is charged for, is phenomenal, extensive and priced at about 140% of wholesale, which is miraculous!!

I will never miss a year here. Christof and Katrin Henkel have put their heart and soul into Dunton so you can reclaim yours here. Thank you all for a fabulous 5 days that will last a lifetime!

We were married at Dunton Hot Springs in 2004. We have traveled back every year and recently the last two years with our small children. We will never miss a year at Dunton! Dunton Hot Springs is the most unexpected, relaxing, casual, pampering, secluded resort you can go to. It has been our grown-up vacation, however this last year with our 5 year old and 2 year old we thought was our best vacation at Dunton yet! The staff is over the top accomodating! Great activities to keep everyone busy (if you like). The food is SSOOOOO amazing that you will schedule massages or hiking around them- you don't want to miss one!!

My wife and I just returned home for a 5 day stay at Dunton Hot Springs, and it was truly a wonderful experience. This may be one of the first places I can say you can 100% unwind. There is something magical about the setting and place in general. The people, the food, the locale, the cabins, location... they have all of it right. If we could just move there.

My wife and I have traveled extensively and been privileged to stay at some wonderful locales, but Dunton is hands down my favorite. Dunton pulls off a very laid back simpler life and still delivers when it comes to service, food, etc. Chef Dennis provided our meals and the food was wonderful. (Top Notch) We spent a few of our evenings chatting with him, and had a great time discussing food, how he prepared items, old times, etc. Our meals were fresh, delicious and always followed by a wonderful dessert.

Eric and Gavin (brothers) we equally great. Each were very helpful, friendly and engaging. We spent a lot of time catching up with Eric and enjoyed our time with him. He was very personable and threw in a few good jokes here and there, all why ensuring we were quietly taken care of. As far as activities go...the hiking is abundant, they offer a solid group of mtn bikes that are above the normal level of rentals, the fly fishing was a great experience as I managed to pull in 8 rainbows in a few short hours along with a great guide (he spent a lot of time with my wife helping her learn, as she has never really fished), the spring, and just pure quiet solitude to read, relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Dunton Springs is not a hoity toidy place, so if you are wanting that, this isn't your place. But, if you love the outdoors, a step back in time to a quieter pace of life, top notch yet unobtrusive staff, stellar food and a beautiful locale, this is your place. We will be returning...really want to come in the winter.

Extremely low-key, get-away-from-it-all environment. One feels free to do as much or as little as one desires. Great mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, fly-fishing on-site. Any other outdoor activity will easily & gladly be arranged for you by the helpful, yet low-key, staff. Everyone begins to feel like one, big family shortly after arriving. Make SURE and book when Chef Dennis will be there! His meals are all incredible, as well as his conversation. Both suffer during his absence. At any meal Dunton will happily create any special requests! Go for the food, family feeling, environment, outdoor activities and natural beauty of the San Juan/Rocky Mountains! Year-round! It's certainly on the pricey side, but it's effects linger with you well after you leave.
