We had a splendid time at Dunton Hot Springs. Not only is the location beyond beautiful, nestled near timberline in the San Juan mountains, it's also a place of restful serenity and impeccable hospitality. Don't expect it to be the Ritz--it's an old ghost town converted into a first-class hotel/spa, but without losing the particular charms of its history and location. The hot springs are different than we'd expected, with water colored red from natural iron and magnesium, and there's no sulfurous smell. We stayed in the General Store, which was quite comfortable and very well appointed (though the upstairs is a bit tight--be warned, tall people!). Food was great, and the service was excellent, especially from the incomparable Gavin, the waiter/bartender/clerk. We very much appreciated his good humor, kindness, and consistent attentiveness and generosity. Definitely a keeper! In all, Dunton exceeded our expectations, and we'll definitely be back! (One warning for those afraid of heights: try to get there before dark, as the narrow, switchback-ridden road we were on was a bit nerve-wracking as the sun went down!) Remember, you're in the Rockies at around 11,000 feet--it's a different kind of spa/hotel experience, so give yourself to its particularities and enjoy!
