On our way to SoCal and decided to split up the drive by making an overnight stop in Visalia. Our good friends do this stop often and suggested we try Jack and Charlie’s – word was good food and a good wine cellar so we decided to give it a go. We visited on a Thursday evening and started looking for the establishment about 7 PM. Streets were almost entirely deserted and we cruised past the place twice before we spotted the phone booth with the name and then realized the restaurant was in the cellar level of the building – signage is minimal for sure. Parking was not a problem but we looked for a street light to park under as it was a little creepy with the lack of people/traffic. Upon entering, no one was at the check-in desk and we waited about 5 minutes before being noticed. A little discerning as there were a number of empty tables and the staff didn’t appear to be all that busy. Once seated we were presented with menus without much of an introduction to the restaurant or the menu, another down check for the staff. Examining the menu, we noted a good selection of small plate offerings as well as up price full dinners. As it was late, we opted for small plates (Pork and Ricotta Meatballs, Crispy Brussel Spout Leaves and Calamari) and a Wedge Salad for each. A wine list was never presented so we decide to eat and get back to our hotel, so no comments on the wine selection. The food was delivered in reasonable time (although the small plates came first and we had to request the salads be delivered) and thankfully, the food was much better than the service. I doubt we will return, frankly it just didn’t make that much of an impression on us.
